While April has traditionally been a rainy period, giving way to the start of spring growth and colors, this coming season also could bring stifling heat that scorches landscapes or results in on-going water shortages. After more than two-thirds of the country experienced drought-like conditions in 2012, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, homeowners everywhere are making preparations for yet another year of extreme heat and a lack of precipitation.

This season, experts from Pennington Seed de-stress lawn and garden care with seven quick tips that will help reduce your outdoor water consumption, while keeping your landscapes lush, healthy and vibrant:

1. Drought-condition plants: Plants can be conditioned for dry weather starting at the beginning of the spring season with a few changes in your irrigation schedule. As part of ongoing maintenance, decrease the frequency of watering and increase the amount of water penetration to encourage deeper rooting. Deeper roots will be more drought-tolerant. That said, it’s important to remember that more watering is needed in the early stages of seed development, including germination and establishment.

2. Don’t be overly reactive: Lawns tend to be overwatered, often with entire lawns being watered to avoid a few dry spots. Overwatering can cause numerous problems, including: shallow root systems; increased disease, weed or insect infestations; reduced drought tolerance; and increased thatch and excessive growth. A lawn does not need water until the color falls by 50 percent, at which time only one inch of water should be added.

3. Select water-efficient plants: By utilizing grass seed that requires less water, lawns are more resilient during periods of drought and easier to maintain (e.g. reduced time, energy and resources). 7. Fertilize thoughtfully: Fertilization supplies plants with essential nutrients for strength, uniform growth and a healthy, fibrous root system. A vibrant and healthy plant makes the best use of available water, meaning less water is needed over time. There also is less chance of the plant being “burned” or dried out to a point beyond recovery. Fertilizers, however, should not be applied during periods of drought.

Basic maintenance can keep your lawn equipment running longer

(BPT) - Spring is just around the corner, so it’s not too soon to begin thinking about getting your lawn equipment ready. From lawn mowers to hedge and weed trimmers, you want to make sure those items are in good working order before you are ready to tackle the lawn for the first time. Use fresh gasoline: Most likely at the end of the season you drained the gasoline out of your lawnmower. Gasoline can become stale and when left in the lawn mower fuel system it will break down and can cause starting or running issues, or in some cases, damage to the fuel system. While there are some treatments available to stabilize the gasoline through the winter months, gas should not be left in the mower for more than 90 days of inactivity. The carburetor needs a “fresh” start every time, so using fresh gas is always optimal.

Change the oil: If your lawn equipment uses engine oil, changing the oil is an important step in the reliability and life of the motor. 3. Aerate. Older or heavily trafficked lawns can suffer from soil compaction. Aeration can also increase the soil contact with new seeds and promote new growth. You can rent an aerator or hire a professional to do the work for you.

4. Seed. Spring offers optimal conditions for establishing new lawns or repairing thin or bare patches in existing lawns, and there is ample time for grass to grow healthy and strong before summer. Turf specialists at a garden store or local university extension office can help select the right seed for your area and usage, pointing you toward the seed closest to existing grass or suggesting alternatives for problem areas. After seeding, water lightly but regularly, keeping the reseeded areas damp until the new grass grows in. A starter fertilizer may be used, but isn’t necessary.

5. Control weeds. Healthy lawns essentially control weeds by squeezing them out. However, if crabgrass or dandelions invade, herbicides may help. Consult a garden specialist about which herbicide is right for your lawn and how to use it. Applying a pre-emergent herbicide in the spring before weed grass emerges can reduce problems down the line. If you’ve applied seed, keep in mind that herbicides can kill it, so use a product that will not affect new growth. For dandelions, digging them up is often effective, but a broadleaf herbicide may be applied.

6. Maintain the mower. Get ready for the first mow with a lawn mower tune-up. Annual service should keep it running smoothly and should include changing the oil, changing the spark plug, swapping out or cleaning the air filter and sharpening the blade. Most lawns are ready for cutting when the grass reaches a 3-inch height, although newly seeded or recently overseeded lawns should be mowed closer to 2 inches until the grass is established. Mow with a frequency that allows for cutting less than one-third the height of the grass. An easy-to-follow rule: let grass grow no taller than 3 inches and trim to no shorter than 2 inches

Repairing a damaged mailbox starts with setting the post

There are about 52 million curbside mailboxes in the United States, according to the United States Postal Service. Unfortunately, many of these mailboxes face damage caused by inclement weather, inattentive drivers or other unexpected incidents that can make mail delivery more challenging. While it is unrealistic to think all harmful accidents to mailboxes can be prevented, homeowners can minimize the time a damaged mailbox is out of commission by making the necessary repairs in a timely manner.

There are many fun and creative ways to spruce up a broken down mailbox with brick, stone, paint, stain and other artistic materials, but it all starts by securing the mailbox post firmly in the ground. Without a well-grounded post, the decorative or aesthetic value of a mailbox could be short-lived. * Pour up to one gallon of water into the hole until is soaks into the dry concrete mix and allow the concrete to set for 20 to 40 minutes.

Pouring a concrete slab

* Construct a form from 2-by-4 lumber, place and compact three to four inches of gravel inside the form as a base, and dampen the form and gravel.
* Place the recommended amount of water into the mixer and then gradually add the concrete mix into the mixer with the water until it is the appropriate consistency. Do not mix more concrete than can be placed in 10 minutes.
* Pour the concrete mix evenly into the form until it is two to three inches above the top of the form.
* Strike off excess concrete using the screed board back, float the surface with a trowel and apply non-slick broom finish.
* Remove the form from the concrete slab using an edger and wait four hours before placing any heavy objects or allowing foot traffic.

Garden detective: Clues to determine and deter unwanted animals in your yard and garden

(BPT) - Holmes and Watson, Riggs and Murtaugh, Starsky and Hutch – when it comes to sleuthing out just what critter is munching on your spring garden, you may feel like your partnership with Mother Nature is as contentious as any that ever graced the big, or small screen. After all, how are you supposed to fight the “crime” of a decimated garden if you can’t identify the suspect who’s been devouring your daylilies?

And while Mother Nature may happily grace your garden with rain, warmth and sunshine, she may not always be on the same team when it comes to keeping critters out of your gardens and landscapes. Foraging pests can destroy your yard, literally overnight.

It is possible to thwart garden thieves, but first you have to know what animals have been dining on your plants and shrubs. Once you’ve identified the culprits, you can settle on effective animal repellents that will persuade pests to leave your garden alone. Here are some facts to get your detective work under way:

Devouring deer – Ragged bites, typically a foot or more above the ground indicate deer damage. Deer are notorious for devouring gardens and landscapes. You’ll see them, and their offspring, every year, making dinner of your daisies, daylilies and other ornamental plants.

Ravenous rabbits – If plant damage is low to the ground – a few inches above the soil – and includes stems clipped cleanly at an angle, you’re probably dealing with rabbits. These four-legged foragers will eat just about any kind of vegetation, including your fabulous flowers, bushes and other woody plants. If you don’t want bunnies nesting and raising families near your garden, remove brush and other debris that could provide them with shelter.

Voracious voles – When flower bulbs disappear from the ground or plant roots go missing, chances are you have voles – mouse-like creatures that burrow underground and that are highly destructive to gardens. Exit holes are further indications that voles are tunneling under your garden. Teeth marks around the base of trees, droppings or trails in the grass can also indicate the presence of voles.

Greedy groundhogs – Mounds of dirt beside burrow entrances are a sure sign of groundhogs, a garden pest that eats just about every type of green plant. Groundhogs can destroy a garden. These solitary herbivores live in burrows underground.

Capricious chipmunks – The on-screen antics of Chip and Dale might charm your children, but the presence of chipmunks in your garden is nothing but bad news. Damage to flower bulbs, plant shoots and leaves, uprooted plants and dug-up roots are all signs you have chipmunks. Their underground burrows may be a challenge to spot since the entrances are usually only about 2 inches in diameter and not surrounded by noticeable dirt mounds. You can curtail their activity by removing yard debris where chipmunks hide.

Salacious squirrels – While you might think of them as mostly the enemy of anyone with a bird feeder, squirrels can also cause damage to gardens. They live in colonies, digging underground tunnels and mounds in grassy areas and around trees that can lay waste to gardens and landscapes.

Once you’ve identified the culprits assaulting your garden, you’ll need the right tools to take care of them. Most traditional pest-control measures – row covers, netting, noise deterrents, predator urine or even human hair strewn around the yard – simply don’t work. Fences can do the job, but they’re expensive and you may live in a community that restricts the type and height of fences you can erect.

Some small animal repellents, however, do work. Bobbex-R is all-natural, environmentally friendly and proven effective at protecting ornamental plantings from small, four-legged garden critters. In testing by the Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station, the product – which works through smell and taste aversion – received a 100 percent efficacy rating at repelling rabbits. “If you’re going to buy a car, you don’t go to see cars at all different price points,” says McAleer. “You look at all the models in the price range you’re looking for so you’re comparing apples to apples.”

Be sure to consider the deck builder’s reputation, customer reviews and portfolio if you plan to hire a contractor. If you are planning to do it yourself, remember to factor the cost of equipment rental into your budget analysis.

“When I design a deck I want to walk through the house to see how they decorate – what’s their style,” says McAleer. “Then I want to walk outside to see what they’re looking at in terms of the view from the house looking out. A lot of people don’t take into account how it looks from the inside out. It’s important to look at the view from more than just the outside looking in.”

Planters should have drainage holes so your plant doesn’t get waterlogged. Left unaddressed, cracks will worsen, ultimately leading to crumbling and the breakdown of the slab. Repairing small cracks can prevent them from becoming larger.

For cracks between one-eighth to three-eighths of an inch wide, use a product like Sakrete’s Concrete and Mortar Repair, which comes in an easy-to-use caulk tube. Slightly larger cracks can be repaired with Sakrete Concrete Crack Filler, a one-quart pre-mixed concrete repair material in a sqeezable container. Cracks should be wide enough to accept the tip of a caulk gun. Larger cracks may require a concrete repair product similar to the one you would use to repair broken or uneven concrete.

For any size crack, begin by cleaning the crack and the concrete around it. Use a wire brush or screwdriver to remove loose chips and dust from the crack. Then, using a garden hose, squirt water directly into the crack to force out all loose material. Allow standing water to drain before filling the crack.

Once the surface is ready, apply your crack-filling product per the manufacturer’s directions.

Restoring worn concrete surfaces

While concrete is one of the most durable surfaces in your outdoor environment, like any other material that’s exposed to the elements and vigorous use, it can start to look worn. Pitting and cracking not only look bad, they can ultimately lead to severe breakdown of the surface.

Before you pay a professional to perform the labor-intensive task of ripping up the old concrete and pouring new, consider resurfacing your worn concrete driveway, sidewalk or pathway. While resurfacing is a little more work than simply patching cracks, it’s still well within the abilities of most DIYers.

Products like Sakrete’s Flo-Coat Resurfacer pour over the existing concrete and, when properly applied, create a durable, visually appealing new surface. Be sure to clean the concrete first – especially if there are oil stains – and follow the manufacturer’s directions for application to ensure the best possible results.

Leveling uneven concrete

Concrete slabs that have separated at the joint, leaving one higher than the other are not only unslightly, but can pose a tripping hazard. Rather than tearing up and repouring the uneven area, consider using concrete repair patching material to level the area.

What to look for when buying a zero-turn mower

(BPT) - Ever wonder how those lawn-care guys get so much done in a day? They use zero-turn radius mowers that can significantly trim the time and effort involved in cutting grass. If you have a large yard to cut, a zero-turn mower can make your task quicker and easier.

These mowers offer the ability to cut tight contours, meaning less time on foot with a hand trimmer or push mower. They also offer improved visibility and faster cutting speeds, so you can spend less time maintaining the lawn and more time enjoying it.

Like any other investment, a zero-turn riding mower can be a great asset if you take the time to learn as much as you can before you buy. The lawn-mowing experts at Toro offer some tips on what to look for when you’re ready to buy:

* Durability – Overall sturdiness of the frame and deck construction are key elements of durability. Comparing specs on steel frame design and dimension, the gauge of the steel (the lower the gauge, the thicker the material) and protection surrounding the rear-mounted engine can give you a good idea of overall durability.

* Deck construction – Is the deck stamped? * Easy-to-adjust cutting height – Adjusting the cutting height on the mower should be easy and fast. Look for a foot assist, if you want the extra leverage, in addition to a hand lever, to quickly raise the deck for short periods, such as when you’re mowing over an exposed tree root.

* Wider tires – Look for a mower with wider tires, which distribute the machine’s weight over a large area and are easier on the grass. They also provide improved traction. Opt for more durable four-ply-rated tires.

* Comfort – Granted, you’ll spend less time riding your zero-turn mower than you would a lawn tractor, but comfort is still key. You will be leaning back against the seat instead of leaning over a steering wheel, so back support is an important consideration. Is the control panel easy to see and reach from the seat? When all the controls are on the same side, it makes operation easier.

* User friendly – Are you a novice or an expert operator? Some zero-turn mowers allow you to adjust your mowing speed to match your level of comfort and control. Choosing the “high mode” gives you maximum speed for mowing flat, open spaces in your yard. The “low mode” allows for enhanced maneuverability when cutting around trees, landscaping, or other tight spaces.

* Price – Zero-turn mowers range in price from just less than $2,500 to a little more than $6,000 for residential versions, and more for commercial ones. While it’s possible to get a quality zero-turn at the lower end of the price range, keep in mind riding mowers at higher range of the spectrum usually come equipped with more features and added durability.

Lawn care 101: Dig into spring with tips for a lush lawn

(BPT) - Having a well-kept lawn not only will keep you in your neighbors’ good graces, it also adds value to your home. Lawn care doesn’t need to be complicated, but sometimes it just needs to be done.

Whether you’re a new homeowner or just looking for smarter ways to mow, seed or weed, the experts at The Home Depot have got the tips to keep the front, side and backyard lush and lovely. Taking steps to care for your lawn now can make sure you have a long, green summer ahead of you.

Take a sweep
What’s going on with your yard? Walk around your yard and check for wear and tear, good drainage and any damage caused by a long winter. Do you have barren spots or areas overgrown with weeds? Assess your needs before getting started this season.

“Sometimes knowing where to start can be the hardest part of taking care of your yard,” says Home Depot Certified Garden Consultant Nick Blassman. “Before heading to the store, take a critical look at the lawn and jot down a list of your trouble spots.”

Weeds and bald spots
Nothing ruins a beautiful, sloping lawn like weeds. Get rid of them easily this year with products like Amdro PowerFlex Weed and Grass Killer - it starts working immediately and kills weeds and unwelcome grasses down to their roots. Bare spots should be patched with healthy grass and most kinds of grass can be seeded over.

Fertilize
It’s a step many people skip over, but a good quality fertilizer can be the key to a beautiful yard. Fertilize once in the spring and then again in the fall. For a healthy yard, choose a fertilizer like Scotts Southern Turf Builder, with a large percentage of slow-release nitrogen and micronutrients. Err on the side of under-fertilizing verses overdoing it - too much fertilizer can dry out your lawn or cause thatch to develop.

If you’ve fertilized and your lawn is getting a good amount of sunlight and water, test the soil to see if it has the proper pH balance (typically between 6.5 and 7.0 for most soils). “Home test kits are very easy to use - get several soil samples from different areas of your lawn, each from about 2 to 3 inches below the surface. Follow the instructions to complete the test and then doctor the soil as necessary,” says Blassman. Adding lime helps up your pH levels, but sulfur, sawdust and compost will bring the pH levels down.

Watering
Lawns need on average about an inch of water a week (either from irrigation or rain). Before spring gets into full swing, check your sprinklers. Turn them on and look for sprinkler heads that may not be working and replace any damaged ones. When you get into the season, if you’re noticing water is collecting in pools around the yard but everything is sprinkling smoothly, your lawn may not be draining properly. Consider removing the turf and adding a topsoil coat to level the ground, then replant with grass or ground cover like water-retaining Cypress Mulch. If you’ve got hard-to-reach shrubs or hanging baskets, a shower wand like the Orbit 33-inch Shower Wand makes watering much easier.

Get a mow on
When you’re mowing your yard, run the lawn mower in a different direction each time so you don’t hurt your lawn by creating ruts in the turf.
