Brandpoint - Free Online Content http://www.brandpointcontent.com Green Livingen-us 5 Experts share 6 bathroom trends to look for in 2024 https://www.brandpointcontent.com/article/41520/ 235291041520 Fri, 15 Mar 2024 06:01:00 GMT (BPT) - The bathroom is arguably the most frequented space in most homes. As the place where we begin and end our daily routines, this space is a vital hub for our lives. Recognizing this, an increasing number of homeowners are now focusing on unlocking the full potential of their bathroom spaces, aiming to create an enjoyable and functional environment that will stand the test of time.

In light of high interest rates and rising home costs, more homeowners are staying in their current homes and opting to refresh or remodel their bathroom spaces to better fit their lifestyle and personality and add value to their homes. As we head into spring, the busy season for remodeling, the bathroom pros at TOTO have compiled the top bathroom trends for 2024 based on third-party expertise and consumer demand.

“There is no better investment in your home than updating your bathroom with the latest technology to create not only a spa-like experience but also ensure your independence and dignity as you age in style,” said Lisa Cini, President and CEO of Mosaic Design Studio.

1. Focus on wellness

In a post-pandemic era where self-care has become an increasingly important aspect of people’s lives, bathroom upgrades are fantastic ways to enhance their personal well-being. For instance, bidet-equipped toilets optimize hygiene, cleanliness, and comfort for people of all ages. Bidet seats are an easy DIY project that can truly transform the health and wellness of the whole family. Other self-care features being added to bathrooms include invigorating showers and baths with unique features that promote recovery and relaxation, allowing users to unwind from the stress of their daily lives.

2. Stylish living in place

Whether it’s for a multigenerational home or to refresh to accommodate living in place, homeowners are looking to future-proof their homes with stylish yet functional upgrades. This means adding elements to the bathroom that support aging and accessibility, like adjustable height wall-hung toilets with bidets, widened doorways, accessibility lighting, beautiful non-slip floors, and grab bars with designer finishes. These add age-friendly functions that provide increased independence while looking chic rather than institutional, like a hospital or nursing home.

3. Spa-like experiences

A big trend for 2024 is bringing spa-like experiences into the bathroom. These include renovations like walk-in showers with multiple shower heads, body sprays, and rain showers like TOTO’s GB Shower Series. Other luxurious upgrades include steam showers, sound systems, heated benches, and towel warmers. Many designers are creating wet rooms that feature soaking tubs as ways to promote relaxation and rejuvenation, offering personal getaways for homeowners in their own bathrooms.

4. Bathroom technology integration

High-tech Japanese-style toilets and electronic bidet seats are leading the charge in bathroom tech for 2024. Americans are asking for toilets that offer cleanliness and comfort. In addition to luxury features like warm water cleansing and warm-air drying, heated seats, and automatic open/close lids, top-of-the-line models like the TOTO NEOREST WX1 smart bidet toilet and WASHLET S7A bidet seat have self-cleaning features that use electrolyzed water to clean the bowl, bidet wand and under the seat, reducing the need for frequent cleaning. Other popular tech upgrades for the bathroom include the introduction of smart technology into everyday items like mirrors, faucets, and showers.

5. Sustainability features

Saving water, conserving energy, and reducing waste have become a high priority for homeowners. They are achieving this by adding shower timers, LED lighting, and refillable shower dispensers to their bathrooms. Others are swapping water-guzzling toilets for dual flush models that use up to 25 percent less water. Bidets also help to reach eco goals by reducing the need for toilet paper by 75%. Models with cleaning and advanced flushing features cut down the need for using harsh chemicals to clean the bathroom, which aids the planet’s health.

6. Personalization by design

Whether it’s to refresh, relax, cleanse, or energize, the bathroom should be a place where you feel perfectly comfortable being yourself. More people are opting to incorporate design elements that reflect their individual style, moving away from cyclical design trends. Adding a personal touch by choosing bold metallic fixture finishes, adding natural textures like stone and wood, and incorporating color into walls and accessories allows homeowners to create bathroom spaces that truly reflect their personalities.

Whether you are planning a quick bathroom revamp or a full remodel, let these expert trends inspire you to transform your bathroom into a highly personalized space that fits your lifestyle, adding comfort and value to your home. To learn more visit TOTOUSA.com.

New HVAC trends increase sustainability and savings for homeowners https://www.brandpointcontent.com/article/42597/ 241671042597 Tue, 12 Mar 2024 13:21:00 GMT (BPT) - Like many sectors, the HVAC industry is no stranger to new challenges, technological advancements and regulatory shifts which in turn can impact homeowners. Today, the sector is buzzing with trends that directly impact homeowners’ comfort, wallet and the planet.

The following insights will help homeowners navigate the evolving HVAC market, enabling them to make informed decisions that benefit their homes and create a more sustainable future.

Decarbonization-Focused Products Offer Sustainability and Savings

In many parts of the country, fossil fuels, such as propane, coal and natural gas, deliver the energy necessary to power furnaces, boilers and water heaters. Using these resources as efficiently as possible is important to saving consumers money and safeguarding the environment. The reality is that the supply of these resources is limited and burning fuels adds harmful greenhouse gases to our atmosphere.

Homeowners concerned about the environment can act to decarbonize their homes, without sacrificing comfort and convenience. Decarbonization is a strategy focused on reducing dependence on resources that produce high levels of carbon emissions and greenhouse gases. The objective of decarbonization is to create a cleaner, more sustainable future that supports the demands and benefits of our modern lifestyle.

With their significant impact on any home’s energy use, HVAC systems are critical in any homeowner’s sustainability and decarbonization journey. Fortunately, the HVAC industry is increasingly championing sustainability, and homeowners today can seek environmentally conscious solutions and companies when making decisions about home heating and cooling equipment. Products that households may consider when following the decarbonization trend are heat pumps, which not only offer efficient temperature control but also contribute to reducing carbon footprints and provide savings on utility bills. For those that may not be familiar, heat pumps offer an energy-efficient alternative to furnaces and air conditioners, and they use the refrigeration cycle to move heat from the outside in, or the inside out, keeping your home at the perfect temperature.

Homeowners should also consider their surrounding environment when selecting a unit. For example, another option that works in all environment types would be a dual fuel system. Often overlooked, a dual fuel system includes a heat pump and gas furnace. On days with colder temperatures, the furnace will ensure that homes stay comfortable despite what’s going on outside.

Leverage New Regulatory Standards to be Clean, Green and Code Compliant

Homeowners often find themselves navigating a maze of regulations impacting a range of home products, including HVAC systems. Starting January 1, 2025, a significant change from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) will involve the switch to more sustainable refrigerants.

Rheem®, a forward-thinking industry player and HVAC manufacturer, has been actively preparing its product lines for this transition and offers homeowners product options, such as heat pumps, that can help reduce a user’s environmental footprint.

Explore Financing and Tax Credit Savings

Inflation and higher interest rates can pose challenges to homeowners looking to invest in highly efficient products. Recognizing this, many contractors offer financing options such as Rheem’s KwikComfort® financing. Additionally, and specifically for homeowners, tax incentives such as the IRA come with incentives for homeowners to upgrade and install environmentally friendly equipment and appliances throughout their home. By taking advantage of the tax credit, homeowners can reduce their tax bill by up to $3,200 and offset some of the upfront costs of making energy-efficient home improvements.

Being a savvy homeowner isn't just about comfort — it's about empowerment. By embracing decarbonization and regulatory shifts, homeowners can actively contribute to a greener, more sustainable future while enhancing the comfort and efficiency of their homes and saving money.

Disease-fighting flowers

When growing impatiens, gardeners must be on guard against impatiens downy mildew (IDM), which is caused by a host-specific water spore. The disease can spread rapidly, and if even one flower becomes infected, it must be removed and discarded to prevent further spread.

Fortunately, the team at PanAmerican Seed® has diligently searched for impatiens varieties resistant to this disease. After extensive plant trials and testing, the company discovered a selection of impatiens demonstrating high resistance to IDM, leading to the creation of Beacon® Impatiens. By planting Beacon® Impatiens, you can rest assured that they'll have a strong defense against IDM infestations, providing peace of mind for your garden.

Blooms that give back

PanAmerican Seed® strives to bring happiness to gardens everywhere, and not just with their flowers. Each year, the company allocates a portion of its global sales from Beacon® Impatiens to shine the light on and support charitable organizations.

For the 2024 gardening season, PanAmerican Seed® and its popular brand of Beacon® Impatiens will partner with the National Multiple Sclerosis Society to support their fundraising efforts and help fight a disease that affects 2.8 million persons worldwide. Now in its fifth year, the disease-resistant Beacon® series continues to donate to various organizations through annual charitable donations from a percentage of global seed sales, raising awareness and supporting community initiatives.

Ready for your best lawn ever? 3 expert spring lawn care tips https://www.brandpointcontent.com/article/42829/ 242761042829 Wed, 28 Feb 2024 10:35:43 GMT (BPT) - Spring is just around the corner! As you make your list of spring cleaning chores, don’t forget to add lawn care to the to-do list.

“The key to a healthy, robust lawn is preparation. Don’t wait until the weather warms up! Early spring is a great time to revive and revitalize your lawn so you can enjoy it the rest of the year,” says Matthew Koch, Ph.D., director of biotechnology, genetics, lawn fertilizer, and grass seed at The ScottsMiracle-Gro Company.

To help fellow lawn-owners, Dr. Koch and Scotts, a leader in lawn care, offer the following three expert lawn care tips to grow lush and healthy natural turfgrass throughout the season and beyond.

1. Feed and seed

After a long, sleepy winter, your lawn needs some help waking up. Dr. Koch recommends feeding your lawn, so it knows it’s time to grow. Try a feed like Scotts Turf Builder Triple Action Built For Seeding. The formula prevents dandelion and crabgrass for up to 6 weeks without harming new grass, jumpstarts grass development, and feeds to protect against heat and drought.

Once your lawn is fed, it’s time to seed! Look for small areas of grass that aren’t growing and patch them with Scotts EZ Seed Patch & Repair Sun and Shade. The grass seed easily fills in bare spots on your lawn, even in tough conditions, including full sun, dense shade, high-traffic areas and on slopes. With a little TLC, your lawn will flourish in no time!

2. Prevent disease

As the spring months continue on, increased humidity and moisture create the perfect conditions for lawn disease to thrive. Look for brown or yellow patches, brown or black spots on the grass blades (leaf spots), white dust (powdery mildew) and red or pink webbing (red thread).

Even if you don’t see signs of disease, Dr. Koch emphasizes the importance of taking steps to prevent disease before it takes hold, and mid to late spring is the ideal time to take preventative measures. Scotts Turf Builder Healthy Plus Lawn Food is the first ever 2-in-1 fungicide and fertilizer that uses broad-spectrum and systemic fungicides to help prevent and control 27 types of lawn diseases. Best of all, the fertilizer helps your lawn grow thicker and greener by strengthening each blade of grass down to the roots.

3. Mow high

As your lawn comes in, don’t cut it too short. When the grass grows tall enough, begin mowing at the highest setting. Mowing high allows grass to grow strong roots and thick blades, providing shade that can prevent weed growth.

Early lawn care will set up your grass for success this spring and beyond. Follow these three simple tips, and your grass will flourish so you can enjoy the stunning landscape around your home ahead of summertime festivities.

Planning home improvements in 2024? Start at the top https://www.brandpointcontent.com/article/41800/ 237411041800 Wed, 07 Feb 2024 07:01:00 GMT (BPT) - At first glance, the value of some home improvements can be hard to see — particularly when the improvements are in the attic. While a gleaming kitchen backsplash, an expansive patio deck or luxury spa bath are all pleasing to the eye, the value of other home improvements may best be appreciated through improved indoor comfort. Installed in the attic area, insulation and ductwork are two examples of often overlooked upgrades that can impact comfort as well as energy savings. Case in point: EPA estimates that homeowners can save up to 15% on heating and cooling costs (or an average of 11% on total energy costs) by air sealing their homes and adding insulation in attics, floors over crawl spaces, and accessible basement rim joists.1

Installing adequate levels of attic insulation and repairing or replacing attic ductwork can help address the root cause of problems such as increased dust, hot/cold rooms or high energy bills. But as the attic area is infrequently accessed, how do you know if a problem exists? Let’s start with insulation. Simply confirming its presence in the attic is not enough. Following are some signs that your home’s attic may need additional insulation:

  • Hot or cold ceilings, walls or rooms
  • Uneven temperatures in a home that cause HVAC systems to run more frequently
  • High heating or cooling bills compared to similarly sized homes in the area

A sufficient amount of attic insulation, typically measured in inches, is necessary to help protect against warm air moving into colder parts of the building envelope. A qualified HVAC technician should be able to evaluate your attic and help you understand how much energy you could conserve by insulating to a specified thickness. For example, contractors designated as AirCare® Professionals are trained by Owens Corning and equipped with tools to assess insulation levels and explain how your home’s attic insulation compares to recommended standards.

Leaks and poor connections in attic ductwork can also lead to problems in other parts of the home. According to ENERGY STAR about 20% of the air that moves through the duct system is lost due to leaks, holes and poorly connected ducts.2 ENERGY STAR also notes that tightly sealed and well-insulated ducts found in qualified homes can reduce annual utility bills by $120 or more.2 Following are some indicators of a problem with a home’s attic ductwork:

  • Spikes in energy bills
  • Rooms that are too hot or too cold
  • Rooms that have a musty odor
  • Heating or cooling equipment that cycles on/off more frequently as the system works harder to heat/cool spaces due to lost air
  • Increased levels of dust

An AirCare® Professional is trained to evaluate the pressure of air running through your home’s ductwork and may use special thermal technology tools that allow you to “see” where air is escaping. He or she also will evaluate the system for loose connections or areas where air may be leaking out of the system. Joints and connections will be evaluated to ensure the ductwork is properly sealed to keep conditioned air inside and help prevent particulates in the attic from entering ducts. To find an AirCare® Professional please visit the online locator at HVAC Contractor Locator | Insulation | Owens Corning.

Ready to get a start on your 2024 home improvements? Don’t lose sight of opportunities in the attic to boost comfort and energy savings.

A Catalyst For Change: Gen Z And The Climate Movement https://www.brandpointcontent.com/article/42793/ 242481042793 Fri, 02 Feb 2024 08:01:00 GMT (BPT) - In recent years, Gen Z has emerged as a pivotal force in the climate industry, significantly influencing the way climate change is addressed in our local and regional communities across the United States. This generation is not only actively participating in the climate conversation but also reshaping it with a diverse and inclusive perspective.

The Tom’s of Maine Incubator

One example is the Tom’s of Maine Incubator, which is designed to resource the next generation of leaders from underrepresented communities who are driving environmental solutions. The program provides funding, mentorship, amplification, and support to early-career changemakers to empower them to Do Good. For Real. The program was first introduced in 2023, and a second cohort of Gen Z leaders has been identified to address climate change in the year ahead:

Brittney Portes, Founder of Gardens of Sol based in Montclair, NJ. Brittney uses her business to raise awareness about sustainable agriculture and farming in her local community.

Danielle Lee, Content Creator of Battery Girlie based in San Francisco, CA. Danielle uses her platform to help Gen Z build impactful careers fighting climate change.

Diamond Spratling, Founder and Executive Director of Girl+Environment based in Atlanta, GA. Diamond created Girl+Environment to empower Black and Brown women to stand up for environmental justice.

Jasmine Lamb, Chair of the Sipayik Resilience Committee based in Orono, ME. Jasmine is committed to improving community resilience against climate change and elevating Native American voices in the climate movement.

Zanagee Artis, Founder of Zero Hour based in Washington, D.C. Zanagee founded his organization with the goal of elevating the voices of young people of color and people on the front lines of the climate crisis.

Representation in the Climate Movement

In the United States, Gen Z's influence is particularly evident at the local and regional levels, as seen with this year’s Incubator Members. They are not just participants in climate discussions; they are initiators and leaders of grassroots movements, community projects, and policy advocacy. For instance, the Incubator Members are working with local governments to develop climate action plans, advocating for renewable energy projects, and raising awareness about sustainable practices within their communities. Their hands-on approach ensures that climate action is not just centered around certain individuals but speaks to the wider population, ensuring those most impacted by climate change are included in finding solutions.

Tom’s of Maine believes that addressing climate change is crucial for several reasons. First, it's about preserving the planet for future generations. Climate change poses significant risks to our environment, health, and economy. By taking action now, you can help mitigate these risks and ensure a sustainable future. Secondly, addressing climate change is essential for social equity, as its impacts often disproportionately affect marginalized communities. As climate change continues, the increased risk from hurricanes is likely to disproportionately affect Black communities, according to McKinsey & Co.

The Power of Gen Z

Gen Z understands the challenges impacting marginalized communities and they are changing this narrative by bringing diverse voices to the forefront. They recognize that the impacts of climate change are not uniform and that solutions must be equitable and inclusive. By diversifying the climate movement, Gen Z leaders like those in the Tom’s of Maine Incubator ensure that the conversation reflects a broader range of experiences and perspectives, leading to more sustainable solutions.

As Gen Z continues to shape the conversation, you can take action at the local and regional level to address climate change in your community. You can help support and amplify the efforts of the Tom’s of Maine Incubator members, volunteer in climate change activities near you, and make a small difference for the health of our planet.

A national home builder is helping build a better tomorrow by democratizing energy efficiency and scaling sustainability https://www.brandpointcontent.com/article/41028/ 232741041028 Thu, 28 Dec 2023 07:01:00 GMT (BPT) - From building homes, offices and all other private and public structures used every day, the construction industry touches the lives of everyone. Given the impact and scale of construction, it's essential that the industry find ways to reduce its environmental impact and embrace sustainable practices.

According to the World Green Building Council®, buildings are responsible for 39% of global energy-related carbon emissions. About 28% comes from operational emissions — including the energy used to heat, cool and power buildings — and the remaining 11% from materials and construction.

However, the industry is changing. One company that is committed to its long-term vision for sustainability is Clayton®, a national builder of attainable, single-family homes.

The homebuilder recognizes that it has a responsibility to carefully manage and minimize the environmental impact of the homes they sell, as well as their operations. Through homebuilding innovations, waste reduction, resource conservation efforts and philanthropic partnerships, Clayton aims to meet communities' needs today while opening doors to a better life for generations to come.

"Focusing on sustainability is the right thing to do for the communities we serve and the world we live in. As builders committed to attainability, we know that every dollar counts, which is why we tackle waste in all of its forms — from materials and resources to the efficiency of our build process. We also recognize our unique opportunity to improve access to home energy efficiency, something our homeowners want and need," said William Jenkins, Senior Director of Environment and Sustainability at Clayton. "Ultimately, these efforts help us to fulfill our vision to develop housing innovations that improve lives and build a better tomorrow."

Building with sustainability in mind

Clayton builds homes that can help homeowners save money on utilities while also conserving the planet's natural resources. Clayton's eBuilt® homes are built to the U.S. Department of Energy's Zero Energy Ready Home (DOE ZERH) specifications. These homes can save homeowners up to 50% on annual energy bills1 and, when paired with a renewable energy system, can offset most or all the home's annual energy use.

Beyond designing and building homes with energy-efficient features, Clayton is working to conserve resources and recycle construction materials. Clayton purchases materials in bulk and works with its suppliers to save on packaging and shipping of items like lumber, siding and sheetrock. These materials are often ordered pre-cut to simplify their use in construction and drive down scrap. The builder's ISO® 14001 program2 focuses on reuse and recycling to ensure excess materials don't go to waste. In 2022 alone, Clayton diverted over 51,000 tons of waste from the landfill.

Targeting carbon emissions

Clayton is committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions in its operations, specifically targeting the emissions from its consumption of fuel and purchased electricity. To accomplish this, the company is modernizing its fleet with hybrid vehicles and electric forklifts.

At Clayton Sulphur Springs, the homebuilder has installed a 200-kilowatt solar carport system. This system produces enough renewable energy to account for 30%-40% of its electricity usage. Clayton will continue to expand its reliance on renewable energy in its operations and install several solar energy systems at home building facilities in East Tennessee, Arizona and at Clayton's Home Office.

Developing water-saving innovations

Water is becoming scarce in many regions of the world, especially in the American Southwest. The Southwest is considered one of the more sensitive regions in the world for increased risk of drought caused by environmental changes. In New Mexico, droughts are expected to worsen in the next half century, making water an even more precious resource.

When building homes, drywall and painting tools must be cleaned to ensure home construction quality. Previously, a building facility in New Mexico used fresh water each time they cleaned the drywall mud and paint tools. However, to help combat drought, Clayton Albuquerque has developed an in-house process to filter the water used to clean the tools three times before it is directed to the municipal wastewater system. This innovation saves over 100,000 gallons of water a year!

Contributing to a sustainable future through partnerships

Clayton is committed to giving back to the communities in which it operates. One way it does so is by partnering with the Arbor Day Foundation®, the largest nonprofit membership organization dedicated to planting native tree species in established forests.

Planting trees helps to restore critical forest ecosystems and is an effective way to help combat climate change. Large-scale reforestation projects are planned in strategic locations, leading to cleaner water, improved air quality and increased biodiversity in their surrounding regions.

This year alone, Clayton will plant 1.19 million trees in forests of great need in 11 different states across the United States. By 2025, Clayton and the Arbor Day Foundation will have planted over 4.47 million trees since their partnership began in 2022.

Drive change to build a better tomorrow

Clayton seeks to evolve the housing industry by driving change through sustainability and innovation. With each home they build, they strive to create a reality where sustainable living isn't just a dream — it's simply the way we live.

Down, the Material that's 97% More Eco-Friendly https://www.brandpointcontent.com/article/41185/ 233291041185 Tue, 19 Dec 2023 15:57:00 GMT (BPT) - Down fill material has been around for hundreds of years, providing us warmth and comfort. It is the gold standard for premium insulation among many outdoor enthusiasts and outerwear shoppers.

Now, there's more reason than ever for down to hold this top position. According to a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), down material is up to 97% more eco-friendly than polyester fill. Three new videos released by the International Down and Feather Bureau (IDFB) based on the LCA, highlight the key elements of down's environmental superiority.

Understanding the life cycle of a product

To understand the vast differences of environmental impact between polyester fill and down, it’s necessary to look at the origins of each material.

Long Trail Sustainability, an independent third-party firm specializing in LCAs and sustainability reports, was commissioned by IDFB to conduct this research to systematically study the potential environmental impacts of both products. They assessed the raw materials and manufacturing processes required by each, and the results were unequivocal — down fill material has an 85%–97% lower impact on the environment across five categories: human health, ecosystems, resources, cumulative energy demand and climate change.

Why is down environmentally superior?

Down is a natural byproduct from the food and agriculture industry. Polyester fill, on the other hand, starts with the extraction of crude oil, proceeds to refinement, then polymerization and finally extrusion. This involved process means polyester burns through far more energy and resources during its production, leading to a climate change impact that’s 18 times higher than down.

Then there’s biodegradability to consider. Polyester, as an oil-based plastic, simply doesn’t break down like natural fibers. It remains in landfills for decades or even centuries, frequently leeching harmful substances into the groundwater. As a result, polyester leaves an immeasurable scar on the planet. Meanwhile, down is about as biodegradable as a material gets. It can decompose in just a few months under the right composting conditions. Better still, because down is composed entirely of the protein keratin, it doesn’t release harmful byproducts during the decomposition process.

Down feels good, is good

Let's take a down jacket, for example. Its warmth, lightness and compressibility have made it a tried-and-true companion for cold-weather adventurers for generations. It’s kept countless outdoor enthusiasts safe and warm while they explore the most amazing sights this world has to offer.

With the newly released videos and additional resources that can be found here, down’s eco-friendly qualities are taking center stage along with the comfort, durability and warmth which remain among the top reasons consumers choose down products.

Now, in a stroke of poetic symmetry, down’s relationship with people and the environment is coming full circle. By choosing down over polyester, consumers can feel good knowing that what is keeping them warm is also helping to sustain the natural beauty of this world for generations to come. That’s a whole new level of comfort to get wrapped up in.

5 easy, effective ways to make your bathroom more sustainable https://www.brandpointcontent.com/article/42263/ 239761042263 Thu, 14 Dec 2023 20:01:00 GMT (BPT) - Are you interested in finding more sustainable options when it comes to the products and processes you use in your home every day? Using more environmentally friendly and sustainable products is top of mind for many households, and the bathroom is one place where even a few small choices can make a big impact.

To transform your bathroom into an oasis of sustainability, here are some simple swaps and practices you can try.

1. Start with your seat

Did you know there's a toilet seat made from 100% recycled material? The Mayfair Greenleaf toilet seat by Bemis is the only seat and lid on the market created entirely from post-industrial recycled plastic, while also offering durability and style. On top of its modern design, its patented Stay•Tite installation system ensures a secure, shift-free fit, along with slow close hinges that eliminate the jarring sound of slamming. All of these elements make it a great choice you can feel good about incorporating into your home.

Mayfair by Bemis Greenleaf toilet seat is available in a classic white finish and elongated design, making green living accessible to every bathroom. You can find it on HomeDepot.com, Amazon.com and ToiletSeats.com.

2. Find better paper

One of the ways you can make your bathroom much more sustainable is through your choice of toilet paper. Instead of selecting paper made from virgin wood pulp, you can save more trees by looking for paper products that are made from recycled paper or bamboo fibers. Today's marketplace offers more options than ever before, so it's worth shopping around and trying different products to find one you like best.

3. Use water smartly

If water conservation is a top concern for you, several approaches can help reduce how much water is being used — and your monthly water bills, too. Here are some easy ways to reduce water use in your bathroom:

  • Choose showers over baths. Showers use less water, especially when you keep them shorter. You can also opt for a lower-flow shower head to further reduce water waste.
  • Need to run water to heat it up? Consider putting a bucket in the bathtub to collect some of this water for later use in cleaning or for watering plants.
  • Catch leaks early. Having a plumber stop by to check for leaks before anything catastrophic happens will not only prevent expensive water damage down the road, but can also reduce water waste. Or start by simply updating small things like your toilet flapper if it hasn't been replaced for a while, as leaks in the toilet tank begin gradually.
  • Aerate your water. Most bathroom faucets come with an aerator today, but if yours doesn't have one, or if it's not working well, they are easy to install or replace yourself.

4. Launder towels in cold water

Laundry detergents have come a long way, and most of them will work just as effectively in cold water today. According to the American Cleaning Institute, 90% of the energy used by a washing machine goes toward just heating up the water, so you can wash your washrags, bath and hand towels in cold water to help save a lot of energy. If you're concerned about sanitizing your towels sufficiently, consider adding laundry sanitizer to your loads.

5. Warm up your floor

An increasingly popular way to reduce energy consumption is by installing in-floor radiant heating, which is very energy efficient as well as long-lasting. While it feels super luxurious to step out of the shower onto a heated floor, it's actually much more thrifty, because in-floor heating is far more efficient than forced-air heating.

Prioritizing the environment begins with simple changes throughout your home. Using these tips, you can start making a positive impact with small, everyday choices you can feel good about.

5 energy-efficient home features guaranteed to help save you money https://www.brandpointcontent.com/article/41027/ 232741041027 Wed, 13 Dec 2023 14:37:41 GMT (BPT) - Imagine this — a home that is not only good for the planet but good for your wallet. That's the allure of energy-efficient homes. Home buyers today aren't just looking for a place to hang their hats. They're seeking sustainable sanctuaries that lessen their environmental impact. But the cherry on top? The potential for significant cost savings. This is especially true when it comes to homes built to U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Zero Energy Ready Homes™ specifications. It's not just a purchase, it's a step toward a more sustainable and cost-effective future.

Last year, the average residential electricity price increased more than 14% across the country, double the rate of American inflation. As a result, more than 20 million families in the U.S. struggled to pay their utility bills. Luckily, some home builders are designing certified Zero Energy Ready Homes with energy-efficient features that can help homeowners save money.

This year, Clayton, a national builder of attainable, single-family homes, launched its newest housing initiative, eBuilt™ homes, which are built to DOE Zero Energy Ready Home specifications and come equipped with dozens of energy-efficient features. eBuilt homes can save a homeowner up to 50% in annual energy costs(1) compared to a traditional off-site built home, allowing homeowners to potentially save thousands of dollars throughout their homeownership journey. Check out five important features of eBuilt homes that can help significantly lower homeowners' utility bills and environmental impact:

1. Tight thermal envelope with additional insulation

Heating and cooling a home year-round can cost a pretty penny. In a typical residence, as much as 40% of energy consumption costs can come from heating and cooling escaping through windows, doors and walls. eBuilt homes are designed with a tight thermal envelope, allowing the home to better manage and retain its temperature.

eBuilt homes have sealed ductwork, which helps prevent drafts, moisture and unwanted noise. All windows, vents, plumbing and electrical penetrations — even the recessed lighting — are tightly sealed. Together, these features contribute to the home’s energy efficiency.

2. Low-E windows

Low emissivity (low-e) windows with argon gas are in all Clayton eBuilt homes. Low-e windows allow less heat to enter and leave your home thanks to the microscopic thin coating that manages daylight transmittance. According to the DOE, low-e windows can reduce a home's energy loss by 30%-50%.(2) Paired with the thermal envelope with the home's added insulation and insulated exterior door, homeowners can expect to significantly cut their heating and cooling bills.

3. ecobee® smart thermostat

eBuilt homes also feature ecobee smart thermostats. According to ecobee, North American customers saved 26% on their heating and cooling costs by keeping their homes at a consistent temperature and minimizing the difference between the indoor and outdoor temperatures.

4. Energy-efficient water heating

For the average American household, water heating is the second largest expense on monthly utility payments, representing up to 18% of their utility bill. With energy-efficient water heating, homeowners can take a chunk off their monthly bills without reducing their hot water use.

All of Clayton's eBuilt homes feature a Rheem hybrid water heater, which uses less energy than a 100-watt light bulb.(3) That translates to as much as $359 in energy cost savings per year!

5. ENERGY STAR®-certified appliances

Clayton's eBuilt homes feature several enhancements that are ENERGY STAR®-certified, like dishwashers and refrigerators. A typical ENERGY STAR-certified refrigerator uses less energy than a 60-watt light bulb, and freezers use 10% less energy than a new non-certified counterpart.

These are just five of the 25 enhancements that contribute to an eBuilt home's energy efficiency. In addition to the energy-efficient enhancements, eBuilt homes are built to accommodate a solar energy system if the homeowner chooses to add one after purchase. With the addition of solar panels, eBuilt homes can transform into a "net zero" home, which can offset up to 100% of its annual energy use by generating the power it consumes.

Beyond Offsetting: How Organic Valley is Leading the Charge in Carbon Insetting and Putting Agriculture on a Climate-Smart Path from Field to Plate https://www.brandpointcontent.com/article/41389/ 234511041389 Mon, 04 Dec 2023 08:01:01 GMT (BPT) - Agriculture, particularly dairy, often gets blamed for its greenhouse gas emissions. Across nearly all agricultural commodities, bolstered by more than $3 billion in USDA climate-smart funding, there is increasing momentum to reduce agricultural emissions and sequester more carbon in soils and forests through climate-smart practices.

Some estimates show that the agricultural sector was responsible for about 9% of total U.S. greenhouse gas emissions in 2021 (putting it far behind the sectors releasing the most greenhouse gas emissions in the U.S.: transportation, industry and electric power).

According to the National Milk Producers Federation, the dairy industry has committed to achieving greenhouse gas neutrality by 2050. While this may seem like a lofty goal, many farms are already reaching this goal through innovative farming practices and carbon investment mechanisms, including carbon insetting.

What is carbon insetting?

You may not be familiar with carbon insetting, but you've likely heard of carbon offsetting. Carbon offsetting happens when individuals or companies finance environmental initiatives leading to quantifiable reductions in greenhouse gases or carbon removal, such as tree planting projects that absorb or "remove" carbon from the atmosphere. The reductions or removals that result from these projects can be purchased as “carbon offsets” on an open market primarily by businesses wanting to compensate for the emissions they generate.

Purchased offsets are used as a type of credit to indirectly reduce their overall carbon footprint without directly changing business operations. On the other hand, carbon insetting is the direct reduction of greenhouse gas emissions within business operations and at the emissions source through the adoption of specific, traceable and measurable practices and appropriate technologies.

What does agriculture have to gain from carbon insetting?

Much like learning a new language, there is no easy way to explain the difference between carbon offsetting and carbon insetting. In carbon offsetting, the environmental benefits, specifically carbon reductions or removals, are detached from the agricultural product, such as corn, milk or beef. These benefits are then sold as offsets to entities outside the agricultural system where these products were produced, like companies in the petroleum or technology sectors.

In an offsetting scenario, the commodity can no longer be labeled or valued as “climate-smart” at the point of sale because the environmental attributes have been sold and claimed as a carbon credit to compensate for a different industrial sector’s carbon emissions. As an economic sector, agriculture no longer has a right to claim those reductions or removals, and America’s agricultural carbon footprint stays the same.

Carbon insetting allows for the environmental attributes — carbon reductions or removals — to track the agricultural commodity throughout the product value chain. The carbon value is never severed from the wheat, milk or beef. It can be claimed by different layers of the value chain that contribute financially or in other ways to the adoption of the practice, including farmers, manufacturers, distributors and retailers. The commodity maintains its climate-smart value from farm to plate, and America’s agricultural carbon footprint is reduced. Carbon insetting is agriculture’s true path to long-lasting and meaningful carbon reductions.

How can food companies engage in carbon insetting?

Organic Valley, a cooperative of small family farms, has launched an ambitious carbon insetting program to reach carbon neutrality. The Organic Valley Carbon Insetting Program incentivizes and assists Organic Valley farmers to implement regenerative, climate-smart farming practices that reduce or remove carbon emissions within the cooperative's own supply chain. Long story short, farmers are paid to install solar, plant trees and/or start composting. As a USDA Partnerships for Climate-Smart Commodities grant recipient, Organic Valley is committed to providing more than $15 million in direct farmer incentives to adopt climate-smart practices over the next five years.

Many Organic Valley farms already incorporate eco-friendly practices like sun and wind power, composting and planting trees for silvopasture. Silvopasture is an innovative way to inset carbon — it is a method that thoughtfully pairs trees, pasture and grazing animals to create a healthy ecosystem. The trees planted absorb carbon over time, turning it into clean air, and can even provide habitats for birds and other woodland creatures.

Other eco-friendly practices the cooperative's farms employ include sustainable manure management techniques, energy efficiency, enhanced grazing and more.

Through investments in carbon insetting, companies like Organic Valley and its supply chain partners will accelerate the adoption of climate-smart practices on America’s dairy farms, ensuring farmers are doing their part to care for the earth and ensure their families can continue to farm for years to come. To learn more about Organic Valley's commitment to carbon neutrality and the cooperative's practices, visit OrganicValley.coop.

Getting to the 'top' of energy and comfort issues https://www.brandpointcontent.com/article/41799/ 237411041799 Thu, 30 Nov 2023 07:01:00 GMT (BPT) - While rising energy prices can lead to higher heating and cooling costs, any spike in energy bills should invite further investigation. If your home’s heating and cooling bills are higher than normal, checking with your neighbors to see if they’ve noticed similar cost increases is a good first step. If owners of similar sized homes in your area are not noticing higher utility bills, it may be time to take a closer look at specific aspects of your home’s heating and cooling system.

The individual components in a home’s HVAC system work together to help keep your home warm in the winter and cool in the summer. The furnace, air conditioner and thermostat are typically the most obvious parts of a system. However, other less visible elements, such as attic ductwork and insulation, also contribute to the HVAC system’s overall performance and energy efficiency.

The ductwork in a home’s attic distributes conditioned air to rooms throughout the home. Leaks in ductwork, loose joints or poor connections between ductwork components can allow conditioned air to escape into the attic before it reaches the intended part of the home. The amount of insulation in an attic also plays a role in comfort and energy efficiency. According to EnergyStar.gov, 9 out of 10 American homes are under-insulated.1 Sufficient levels of insulation help reduce heat transfer between the attic and living spaces in the home.

Warning signs of issues in the attic

What are some warning signs that a problem may be lurking in the attic? One tell-tale indicator that your home may have “attic issues” can be observed by simply looking at your home’s roof on a cold morning. If frost or a dusting of snow appears on the roofs of neighboring homes while your home’s roof is frost/snow free, this may be an indicator that your attic is under-insulated or that heated air is escaping attic ductwork and “heating” the roof deck so that frost/snow melts away.

Other signs of a problem with ductwork may be noticeable inside the home. Rooms that are consistently too warm or too cold, or that have a musty odor, may indicate compromised attic ductwork. An increased level of dust inside the home is another sign that ductwork may need attention. Leaks in attic ductwork can allow dust and various particulates inside the attic to enter ducts. Distributed throughout the home, these particulates can negatively affect air quality.

Detecting issues can inform solutions

While a frost-free roof on a frigid morning or torn ductwork is an obvious sign of a problem, attic ductwork issues are often hard to see by simply looking around the space. A contractor trained to inspect ductwork and assess insulation levels in the attic can identify issues that may reduce your comfort and lead to higher energy bills.

Training and tools play a crucial role in identifying problems in the attic. For example, Owens Corning equips Certified AirCare® Professionals with training and tools to assess attic insulation and ductwork. The information gathered through a thorough inspection can inform recommendations to support comfort and energy efficiency. An HVAC technician should include an attic inspection as part of routine maintenance visits as well as service calls. During the inspection, a technician should check ductwork for leaks and may use special thermal technology that visually shows where air is escaping from the ductwork.

A Certified AirCare® Professional also will measure attic insulation and advise you on the energy savings that could potentially be achieved by adding insulation to bring your home up to the levels recommended by energy codes for your home’s climate zone.* Today’s energy codes specify higher levels of insulation compared to homes built even a few decades ago.

It is important to remember that a higher energy bill does not necessarily indicate a problem with equipment. An inspection by a heating and cooling contractor who brings a system perspective to caring for a home’s air and the attic infrastructure that supports it can help improve a home’s comfort and energy efficiency season after season. Clean smarter, not harder: 5 tips to a tidy home when time crunched this holiday season https://www.brandpointcontent.com/article/41360/ 234281041360 Mon, 27 Nov 2023 14:11:00 GMT (BPT) - Parties, family gatherings, time with friends and the occasional surprise guest — the holidays are full of fun get-togethers and reasons to celebrate. While there’s much to look forward to, cleaning your home might be a less joyous holiday activity.

Tidying your house can be a lot of work. When you need your home to look its best for a big event, small gathering or just an unexpected guest, a quick clean with minimal effort can make all the difference. Here are a few proven tips and tricks to save time by cleaning smarter, not harder.

Tip 1: Use multitasking cleaners to save time

You don’t need a cabinet overflowing with cleaning solutions. Choose multitasking options like Bona’s all-purpose cleaners that clean a myriad of surfaces, including stainless steel, glass, ceramic, granite and stone. You can quickly tackle many tasks in your home and feel good about using a product that is 99% USDA certified bio-based content, meaning it’s better for the environment.

Tip 2: Create clutter bins for quick cleans

One way to help cut clutter is by creating a bin system to quickly tidy a space. In each room have a small basket or bin handy where you can toss in items that need to be put away in a hurry. This helps clear spaces, especially when time is running short. You can put the bin into a closet to tend to later or assign the bin to a family member to put items away while you focus on another task.

Tip 3: Focus on the floor for a tidy appearance

A quick clean of the floor makes any space look tidier in a snap, and a cleaning system like Bona’s Premium Spray Mop is ideal for both dusting and mopping. With an extra-large mop head for faster cleaning, microfiber pads that can be washed and reused up to 500 times and a system that uses 97% less water than a traditional mop and bucket, it’s a great value that is also environmentally friendly.

Tip 4: Use a grab-and-go mobile cleaning caddy

When you only have a few minutes, a well-stocked plastic caddy can be a life-saver. Pack your caddy with your go-to favorites including Green Guard Certified, USDA Biobased and EPA Safer Choice cleaners to ensure safe ingredients are used around your home. Add in items you find useful like microfiber cloths, paper towels and rubber gloves. This way, when you get that last-minute call or text, you're ready for a quick clean before guests arrive.

Tip 5: Don’t worry, be merry

The holidays are meant to be about family and friends, so try to do a little less cleaning and a bit more enjoying. While you might notice the few crumbs on the floor or dust on a shelf, there's a good chance your guests won't. Focus on cleaning the high visibility areas, surfaces and floors while reducing clutter to get the most impact, especially when you’re low on time. Let the rest go and spend your time enjoying the season.

In just a few minutes, it's easy to make your home guest-ready. Remember, the holidays are about time with loved ones, so stress less, enjoy your home and embrace the joy of the season.
