How to eat your heart out and lower your heart disease risk

Every day your heart makes enough energy to drive a truck 20 miles. To do this, your heart needs a little help from you. Just like a well-running automobile, your heart needs fuel to keep it chugging along.

The good news is the fuel your heart needs isn’t necessarily boring or tasteless. The key is to select foods that taste great and reduce major heart disease risk factors. You can lower your risk simply by fueling your heart with foods that keep your blood pressure and cholesterol at healthy levels.

By choosing the right nutritious foods that not only lower your heart disease risk but are delicious too, you can eat your heart out and enjoy every minute of it. Here are some of the yummy snacks the experts at Life Line Screening, a preventative health organization, recommend:

Sushi
Fish is a fantastic source of heart-healthy omega-3’s, and sushi is loaded with them. Plus if you skip the tempura and spicy mayo, sushi is a tasty, low-calorie choice for your heart.

Eggs
Even though eggs have gotten a pretty bad reputation over the years for their cholesterol, they also contain a great deal of health-boosting nutrients like protein, vitamins B12 and D and folate. With so many options for preparing eggs, you can enjoy the variety that comes with this food.

Healthy ravioli
It’s true that basic ravioli might not be the best food for your heart. Whole-grain ravioli, on the other hand, is a great substitute. Top this ravioli with ingredients like olive oil, artichokes and tomatoes and you have yourself a nutrient-packed meal that’s great for your heart.

Pizza
This one may be hard to believe but depending on which toppings you choose, pizza can be good for your heart. Instead of ordering or making one piled high with extra cheese and pepperoni, select toppings like artichokes, mushrooms, onions, bell peppers or tomatoes. These cholesterol-reducing, low calorie extras are the perfect alternative.

Strawberries
This sweet, juicy fruit is a great source of vitamin C, a nutrient good for your health. These red berries are considered a superfood linked to improved memory and heart health. They can even reduce blood pressure, one of the major risk factors for heart disease.

The Centers for Disease Control state that almost half of all Americans have one of the top three risk factors for heart disease which include high blood pressure, high LDL (bad) cholesterol and smoking. Reducing two out of three of these risk factors is simple because they can both be influenced by your diet.

Identifying other risks of heart disease is another smart way to keep your heart at its peak of health. Health screenings are a great option for this if you’re really looking for proactive ways to stay on top of your health.

While keeping all of these things in mind, the opportunity for a strong heart isn’t far-fetched. Pile your plate with heart-strengthening foods like those listed above and your heart can keep pumping energy through your body for years to come.

Want to get paid to go to the gym? Become a personal trainer

(BPT) - One upside to the burgeoning obesity epidemic is that it’s fueling the growth of jobs in the fitness industry.

Whether you’re one of those people in need of a personal trainer or you’re looking for work in a dismal job market, the bureau of labor statistics reports “employment of fitness trainers and instructors is expected to grow by 24 percent from 2010 to 2020, faster than the average for all occupations.”

According to Jeff Rosga, director of education at Life Time Academy, the training and certification organization for Life Time – The Healthy Way of Life Company, weight loss is a primary driver for people who seek out a personal trainer. “There is a very large population of boomers with the economic means to hire a personal trainer,” he adds. “Their requirements are substantial; they want a high-quality experience in training as well as in-depth knowledge. Some are injured, have functional issues, or simply want to be more physically active, and need assistance in learning how to overcome their challenges.”

Demand for personal training is also getting a boost as businesses and insurance companies see the relationship between healthier employees and lower health care costs by persuading employees and members - by virtue of various incentives - to get fit.

Phyllis Soltis, 59, from Lakeville, Minn., has worked in administration and was even a police officer at one time. She was drawn to personal training while a member of Life Time Fitness, where she lost 70 pounds. “All the jobs I’ve had involved working with people,” Soltis says. Exercise, too, had always been a part of her life, and as she considered what sort of job change she could make at her age, she turned to personal training and applied to Life Time Academy.

Choosing the right certification program matters. “When you earn a certification you are directly linked to the certification body,” says David Van Daff, vice-president of business development and public affairs with the National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM). “The reputation of the certification, both positive and negative, will impact how you are perceived as a fitness professional.”

Choosing the right personal training certification can be confusing says Van Daff, who recommended the following considerations when choosing a program:

1. Industry standards: Earning a certification that is not accepted by respected employers is a waste of time and money. Contact local fitness centers and ask what certifications they accept. If a certification is not universally accepted, don’t buy it.

2. Curriculum/faculty: What you study and learn in a certification program should have practical application. In addition, research the credentials and reputation of the faculty. Evaluate their background, accomplishments, testimonials and contributions to the industry.

3. Advanced specializations: Most successful personal trainers specialize in a particular area. Investigate what specialty credentials and certifications are offered by the certification organizations you are considering.

4. References: Ask a manager at a fitness facility which certifications best prepare new personal trainers. Having managed personal trainers with varying certifications and education backgrounds, they can provide insight into the value of various certification programs.

A 2012 NASM study found that certified personal trainers who were not previously employed in the fitness industry, on average found employment in less than one month. That was true for Soltis, who graduated from Life Time Academy in December and was immediately employed at Life Time Fitness in Eagan, Minn. Soltis says one of the benefits at Life Time Academy were the weekly in-club labs, something not offered by many other programs. The 120 hours of hands-on experience allowed her the confidence to go from student to trainer seamlessly.

“I have specialty certifications through the Academy’s partnership with NASM in corrective exercise and performance enhancement,” Soltis says. Other partners include Yoga Alliance, American Council on Exercise, and Peak Pilates. She said she plans to use her knowledge in power lifting training and competitions to attract a clientele of “women of a certain age” who want to strength train. “Weight loss is a big one too, because of my own experience. I understand it from a personal perspective,” she adds.

Pay for noncertified personal trainers range from $18,000-$31,000. As a graduate of Life Time Academy Soltis knows she can expect to eventually earn more than $40,000 a year and the possibility to make more than she has in other jobs. “I see the potential to make more because there are no limits. It’s like being in business for yourself, but not by yourself.”

Address your skin's needs through a holistic approach to facial skincare

(BPT) - Many women cite a number of external factors that can trigger sensitive skin flare-ups, including harsh ingredients, weather and makeup. What they may not know is that lifestyle choices can also influence the health and appearance of their skin.

Different lifestyle factors, including diet, fitness and stress management can affect skincare in addition to the facial skincare products used. Simple, a line of facial skincare products that is perfect even for sensitive skin, recognizes this, and therefore, takes a holistic approach to skincare by focusing on the link between all of the factors that impact skin.

Simple is launching The Simple Advisory Board, a panel of leading industry experts who offer advice for a complete approach to skincare. Board members are sharing tips to help achieve natural, healthy-looking skin all year long through a balanced, holistic lifestyle approach.

* Dr. Debra Luftman is a Board Certified Dermatologist who believes that healthy skin can have a positive impact on overall health. She also firmly believes skincare does not need to be complicated to be effective.

Top tip: Sooth tired eyes with a cool home remedy

Sometimes when eyes are feeling tired or irritated, the wakeup call they need might be found in the refrigerator! Chill spoons in the refrigerator and place them over your eyes for an instant soothing sensation and an immediate, chilly jolt back to life. Dr. Luftman says, "your eyes will feel cool and look refreshed, the blood vessels around your eyes will shrink and eye circles will appear to vanish!”

* Trainer-to-the-stars, Kacy Duke – whose client list reads like a red carpet who’s who – is one of the most sought-after personal trainers and fitness consultants in the world, in addition to being one of the founders of Equinox Fitness Clubs.

Top tip: Get moving and get skin fit

Exercise can be hard to fit into busy schedules and often takes a back seat to other priorities. On the days when you cannot make it to the gym, find alternate ways to squeeze in some movement so your daily routine can help you pick up the slack. Take the stairs over the escalator, get off the bus a few stops early or jump around the living room to your favorite song. By finding ways to move – even on non-gym days – you promote better blood flow and circulation, which show in the health and beauty of your skin.

* Gita Bass is no stranger to the stars. She’s credited with creating amazing looks for many celebrities on and off camera and is the talent behind numerous editorial photo shoots and advertising campaigns.

Top tip: Take it all off (makeup that is) before hitting the sheets

One of my top tips for a great make-up look is to start with the proper base: prepping your skin. If your skin is smooth and even, then your makeup is halfway done, which makes getting ready for a night out much easier. Just because you look amazing for a special date or dinner with friends doesn’t mean that you can forget about your skin once you get home (even if it’s past your bedtime). The best way to ensure your skin achieves a natural, healthy glow is by getting into the routine of cleansing before bedtime. Overnight, skin needs oxygen to repair itself, and sleeping in make-up can clog pores, causing breakouts and puffy eyes. Gita’s favorite way to cleanse gently and rid skin of impurities before sleep is with the new Simple Foaming Cleanser.

* Ellie Krieger is a “New York Times” bestselling author and host of the Food Network and Cooking Channel’s hit show “Healthy Appetite.” A registered dietitian, Krieger holds a master’s degree in nutrition from Columbia University. Her success can be attributed in part to her unique way of offering real life advice without any of the gimmicks and crash diets that permeate today’s trends.

Top tip: Put tomatoes to the test

Fine lines are a natural part of aging, but you can help combat them with the right diet. Tomatoes, in particular, contain an antioxidant that is proven to reduce skin cell damage, which can often lead to fine lines. Try an easy spinach salad with chopped tomatoes. Go the extra mile and top your salad with almonds or sunflower seeds. The vitamin E found in these nuts and seeds can help further protect against cell damage.

* Dr. Josie Howard is a board-certified psychiatrist with a practice dedicated to general adult psychiatry. She specializes in psychodermatology, an area of medicine that focuses on the relationship between stress, emotional well-being and skin health.

Top tip: Say it with a smile

Any level of emotional stress we experience can readily be detected on our face, whether it is seen through breakouts, irritation, blushing and of course, frowning. When we smile, we look better, less tired and more refreshed. An added benefit of smiling is that our brains interpret this as a signal that we really are happy and content. Moreover, smiling can help others react to us in a more positive way, which can lead to better and less stressful interactions (or a better and less stressful experience).
Go nuts and celebrate your health with a handful

(BPT) - Good things really do come in small packages. And when it comes to your health, pistachios pack a powerful punch: They help you manage your weight, may help reduce blood pressure and a study published in the “International Journal of Impotence Research” shows they may even help with erectile function. Here are three big reasons why you should unshell and celebrate your health with a handful.

The power of pistachios

Pistachios are a great snack chock-full of vitamins and nutrients including antioxidants, beta carotene, fiber, glutamine, potassium, phytosterols, zeaxanthin and B6. “You really can’t go wrong with pistachios,” says director of sports nutrition at the University of Southern California, Becci Twombley. “With six grams of protein in every 160-calorie serving, pistachios are a protein front-runner compared to 160 calories of other common snacks.” In addition, pistachios have more nuts per serving (49) than any other tree nut.

Performance food for athletes

Whether you’re an elite athlete in training or a casual fitness buff, what you eat will affect your performance.

“As an athlete, your body needs the right carbohydrates, protein, fat, vitamins, minerals and fluids,” says Twombley. Pistachios are a great pre- and post-workout snack because they contain a good source of lean protein, the right type of fat and electrolytes such as potassium.

Green goodness

Their taste is unbeatable. They can be enjoyed right out of the bag, or to jazz them up, you can season them right in the shell, like these Saffron and Vanilla Pistachios by Chef Grant MacPherson.

Saffron and Vanilla Pistachios

Ingredients:

1 pound American pistachios, in-shell

1.5 ounces Spanish saffron, steeped in cold water

2 vanilla beans, scraped

2 tablespoons canola oil

Sea salt to taste

Directions:

Warm canola oil in roasting pan or wok on your stove top, add pistachios and lightly toast. Add saffron, with some liquid to coat the pistachios. Add the vanilla bean scrapings and stir to incorporate; season with sea salt to taste. Remove from heat and serve warm in the dish of your choice.

“Pistachios also appeal to those with a sweet tooth,” says Judy Hirigoyen, director of Global Marketing at American Pistachio Growers. “Whether it’s ice cream, cake or tarts, pistachio-inspired desserts will win over anyone you prepare them for.”

In addition to flavoring for premium snacking, American Pistachio Growers have a wealth of recipes developed by renowned chefs.
Cycling to help stop diabetes

(BPT) - The American Diabetes Association is challenging bicycle riders to be part of the movement to Stop Diabetes(R) by participating in the annual Tour de Cure(R), a cycling event to raise funds to help fight diabetes. Tour de Cure is a fun way to get out with your family, friends or co-workers and has routes designed for all riders - from 5-mile family rides to 100-mile century rides. It is a ride, not a race, so participants are encouraged to go at their own pace.

If you have diabetes, you can join the Red Riders. This special program recognizes riders who have diabetes the day of the ride with a red jersey. During the Tour, participants call out "Go Red Rider" to encourage and celebrate the Red Riders who are fighting to manage their diabetes and live a healthier life.

"The Red Rider program is a great way for those with diabetes to gather the strength, courage and motivation to live well all the other days of the year when we aren't riding in Tour de Cure," says Mari Ruddy, founder of the Red Rider program. Ruddy has lived with diabetes for more than 31 years and is the director of TeamWILD Athletics: We Inspire Life with Diabetes, which provides eTraining programs and a fitness training camp for people with diabetes looking to use endurance walking, running, triathlons and cycling to improve their health.

Ruddy, describes the Tour de Cure as a celebration of health and wellness. "The Red Rider program gives us an opportunity to celebrate the hard work, dedication and teamwork it takes to manage this challenging and complex disease,” says Ruddy. “When we give a participant a red jersey that reads, 'I ride with diabetes,' it puts a face to the disease that says, ’This is what diabetes looks like: We get on our bikes and we Stop Diabetes.’” Ruddy will be riding in the Las Vegas, Twin Cities, Chicago and Michigan Tours in 2013.

Cycling is great exercise, but it is important to make certain your biking equipment is ready before hitting the road. Be sure to check brakes, grease the chain and make certain helmets still fit properly. Take a short ride around the neighborhood to ensure everything works and that the tires are sufficiently filled with air. If it’s been a couple of years since the bike was purchased or cleaned, it might be a good idea to take it to a bike shop to have all the gears and brakes inspected.

More than 65,000 cyclists are expected to participate in the Tour de Cure at sites throughout the country in 2013. All funds raised at the Tour de Cure events will go to support the American Diabetes Association's mission - to prevent and cure diabetes and to improve the lives of all people affected by diabetes.

Join Tour de Cure to benefit your health and to support the fight to stop diabetes. To register as an individual rider, a Red Rider, start a team, or learn more, visit www.diabetes.org/tour or call 888-DIABETES.

Zapping top myths about laser hair removal

(BPT) - For people considering laser hair removal for the summer, there’s good news – now is the perfect time to start. Easily hidden under typical cool weather clothing like bulky sweaters and leggings, skin is shielded from the sun and thus in perfect condition for hair removal. However, many men and women are on the fence when it comes to investing in long term hair removal due to several common misconceptions.

Here are the top five laser hair removal myths busted by Dr. Paul Flashner, chief medical director for American Laser Skincare:

1. Doesn’t treat all skin types
Today there are more advanced technologies, such as the GentleMax Pro system, which delivers a wide range of treatments for effective hair removal on all skin types. Each treatment focuses on the individual, and the system prompts a series of questions about the person’s skin tone and overall makeup to help determine optimal settings for best results. It leverages two fast and powerful lasers: the Alexandrite and the Yag, for customized results on all skin types, light and dark. It is important to note that if you are considering laser hair removal, you should first work closely with a skincare consultant to understand what treatment options work best for your individual skin.

2. Too painful
No pain no gain? The leading edge technology in laser hair removal has enabled a more comfortable experience for those nervous about the “ouch” factor. It delivers an intense but gentle burst of energy onto targeted areas of the skin, delivering a controlled amount of therapeutic heat to the area. In addition, many of our clients report that the system’s cool pulse provides increased comfort during treatment.

3. Too expensive
While laser hair removal does require a more substantial upfront investment, long-term results significantly trump traditional routines such as shaving or waxing. Studies have shown that women spend, on average, $10,000 on shaving over their lifetime, with waxing more than doubling the investment, especially when done by a professional. Laser hair removal can help save time and money over the course of a lifetime, and aesthetic service providers like American Laser Skincare offer a true personalized experience based on real, effective and achievable results.

4. Requires frequent clinic visits and treatments
GentleMax Pro treatments are separated by a window of four to 12 weeks depending on the treatment area and the individual’s hair regrowth cycle, making long-term hair removal a much less tedious and time consuming task. In order to be ready for summer, now is the perfect time to start.

5. Need to let unsightly hair grow in between treatments
Laser treatments target the root of the hair rather than the surface hair so you are able to shave in between treatments and not worry about growing any unsightly hair.

“Anyone is who is thinking about getting laser hair removal wants to experience fast and effective results,” says Dr. Flashner. “The technologies available now target faster results, fewer treatments and less discomfort. Now is the perfect time for people to make sure they’ll be beach ready by summer.”

Laser hair removal treatments are available at all 100+ American Laser Skincare clinics across the country. For more information or to book a free consultation, visit www.americanlaser.com for a full list of local clinics.

(BPT) - If you love March basketball, here’s how to use the time and energy you spent on choosing a winning bracket to live your own hoop dreams.

Step 1: Put down the remote.

If you enjoy the game enough to watch others play, it stands to reason that basketball will be an enjoyable way for you to get cardiovascular exercise.

Scott Cotterman, 32, from Eagan, Minn., never played high school or college basketball but has played recreationally as long as he can remember. He’s a big basketball fan, but rather than watch games at a sports bar, he’d prefer to play and devote his time organizing intramural leagues (he’s currently the general manager of his Ultimate Hoops team at Life Time Fitness). He strives to exercise every day. “I play ball about four or five days a week because I still love it and it’s a fantastic workout.”

Step 2: Pick up the basketball.

Despite what you might think about your athletic ability, if you’re willing to play, there’s a team out there for you.

Onaje “The Contest King” Walker, 32, from Montclair, N.J., said his only basketball experience as a child was shooting balled up socks through a wire hoop in his room. “I wasn’t interested in sports growing up,” he says. In middle school that changed when classmates picked him (last) to be on a recreational team.

“My plan was to stay away from the ball,” Walker recalls. That worked until he found himself wide open and a teammate passed him the ball. He made the shot. “I had an instant love for offense. Who would have known those hours of punishment in my room would pay off?”

Step 3: Get connected.

You might want to begin with those buddies in your pool, whose brackets have no hope anyway, to start a team.

Chris Maher, 27, from Crystal, Minn., played pick-up basketball in college, which is where he met his best friend, Derek. “After Derek and I graduated we would go to Life Time Fitness to work out together,” Maher says. “Every Thursday night we would get kicked out of the gym because of Ultimate Hoops. After watching the league games a few weeks Derek and I wanted to give it a shot. After the first game we were hooked.”

Step 4: Become a basketball celebrity.

When you play in a league like Ultimate Hoops, you may not become a household name but you can become nationally known within the league.

Carlton Weatherby, 28, from St. Louis Park, Minn., played college basketball as a reserve point guard and team captain at Stanford University. “It’s pretty cool to be recognized as a top player, even after what I’d consider to be my glory years,” Weatherby says. “After a good game I'll send my stats to some of my old teammates who are still playing professionally and tell them ‘I still got it.’”

All Ultimate Hoops games are staffed with two referees and two stat keepers that update a national website with a detailed player roster. The site at www.uhlife.com provides weekly power rankings of teams, all-star voting, a “player performance value” based on professional basketball players salaries with comparable stats, and a playoff system modeled after the NCAA tournament.

Step 5: Don’t stop playing.

Half the battle of staying fit is finding activity you enjoy. If you have a love for the game, then make basketball your exercise.

“Generally I’m the oldest guy on the court,” says Mike “Hat” McCarthy, 39, from Atlanta. “I’m not as quick as I used to be. I just have to adjust my game to where I can make the team more effective.” That means he puts in time off the court working out at the gym and eating right.

For a fit that flatters, color matters

Nothing is black and white about fashion trends, unless the trend is black and white fashion. From the streets of SoHo to the fast lanes of Los Angeles, to the downtown in every hometown in between, fashion stories are currently being told on polar ends of the gray scale: black and white blocks, herringbones, checks, prints, and the neutrals black and white make in tandem.

On the other end of the spectrum, big hits of color are also headlining fashion news. So how do you make sense out of it all? How do you skillfully pair up colors, or blacks with whites, or add a pop of intense color onto a neutral? And how do you know which hue or neutral is right for you?

Fashion magazines load their pages with the season’s hottest color trends, but fashion cataloger Monroe and Main helps readers stay on-trend by making sense out of it. Often fashion magazines show readers that accessorizing with color is a wonderful way to achieve figure-flattering effects on a model who is 6 feet tall and 100 pounds, but it’s hard to see how the concept works on average figures.

“Our selections are made with sensitivity to the wide range of figures in our customer base, women sizes 6 to 24,” says Ann Bush, Monroe and Main catalog president. “We think about all of our customers’ needs, not just the trends.”

“Providing flattering gray scale combinations is just as important as finding the right pieces on the color spectrum,” says Bush. “For example, too much white can create an oversized effect, so we add a warm shade to trendy blocks of black and white, and show that softening effect throughout our catalog and on our website.”

The spring catalog features black and white styles and big color trends, like spreads called Tangerine Tango or Blue and Purple. Its “Get The Look” blurbs give customers valuable trend tips, like:

“Tangerine, orange and coral continue to make a splash on the fashion scene. Pair them with neutrals and figure-enhancing silhouettes for a confident look that adds instant energy to your wardrobe.”

Find more recommendations for the season’s hottest colors and styles at www.monroeandmain.com/On-Trend/Color-Trends/index.cat.

A Fit For You Guide outlines how color and fit work together to complement a wide range of body types, which makes pairing them ultra-easy. Here are its four key color do’s:

* A pop of color at the top reduces hips and adds height.

* A light color on top and darker on the bottom elongates a short torso.

* Strategically placed color blocks complement the midsection.

* A dark color on top and lighter on the bottom de-emphasizes the bust.

After the shopper has identified her favorite colors and styles, she can follow links to find specific fashions and accessories. It makes the hunt for complementary pieces a cinch.

“Every color, print and texture has a unique flattering effect and tells a unique story,” says Monroe and Main fashion expert Sue Thrasher.

For instance, a big splash of red can create confidence, or it can draw unwanted attention in places you don’t want highlights. Or if a print is too big, it can overwhelm a shape, especially if the color is too bright or highly contrasted, according to InStyle Magazine’s March issue.

“We watch color and style trends, but we analyze how they work with different shapes to bring out the best in our customers’ range of real-woman figures,” says Thrasher.

Visit www.monroeandmain.com, or request a catalog using the link at the bottom of the webpage.

You need to be prepared mentally as much as you invest in yourself, physically. So, you need to be ready from your head to your toes – it’s a full body commitment. Hard work aside, you’ll be sure to enjoy the new you as you reach your goal.”

He has a few tips to help you tackle your workout routines and get your body ready for your summer wardrobe:

* Stay hydrated. Do squats and lunges to help tone the thighs and glute area.

* Eat plenty of fiber. Remember you can get fiber from many different foods, including delicious summer fruits such as raspberries, blueberries and strawberries!

* Wear the right footwear. Dr. Scholl’s(R) Active Series(TM) Replacement Insoles offer targeted Triple Zone Protection – in the ball of the foot, the arch, and the heel – to help protect feet with every step. These insoles can help relieve and prevent pain for those suffering from shin splints, runner’s knee and plantar fasciitis.

* Add weights to your workout routine. They don’t have to be heavy to help trim and tone your muscles.

* Keep up the workout, even while on vacation. Add a little variety to the routine with yoga or a jog along the beach. Time your workouts in the morning so you can enjoy the rest of your day.

* As always, be sure to exercise responsibly and consult with a fitness expert to ensure you use proper form.

Summer and warmer weather will be here before you know it, so get started right away to show off your physical fitness and summer-ready body.
Flip-flop fans: Hard, cold facts about your favorite hot weather footwear

(BPT) - It’s easy to understand why we all love flip-flops: They’re cute and comfy, keep your feet cool in warm weather, and are great for showing off that fab pedicure you just got. But no matter how much you adore your flip-flops, they shouldn’t be all-occasion footwear. Sometimes, they can lead to sore feet or even severe injury.

“Flip-flops are hugely popular, but it’s important to remember they’re not appropriate for everyday wear or for all occasions,” says Dr. Matthew Garoufalis, a podiatrist and president of the American Podiatric Medical Association. “Every spring and summer, podiatric offices see an influx of patients with injuries and ailments directly related to wearing flip-flops at the wrong time or wearing the wrong flip-flops altogether.”

The secret to safely enjoying flip-flops through summer is two-fold, Garoufalis says. First, find the right style, and second, know when to wear flip-flops and when to wear something else.

How to choose flip-flops

Some styles of flip-flops may cause blistering and pain, and increase your risk of injury in certain situations. It is possible to find a better flip-flop. The APMA offers some tips:

* Look for high-quality, soft leather, which will minimize the risk of blisters and other skin irritations. Vinyl or rubber styles are more likely to rub your foot the wrong way. Check out the APMA website for footwear products that have earned the organization’s Seal of Acceptance. The seal indicates that a team of APMA podiatrists have evaluated the product to ensure it promotes normal foot function and health.

* Choose a flip-flop with soles that bend at the ball of the foot. If you can bend the sole completely in half or wring it like a wet rag, the sole will not provide proper support.

* The thong part of the flip-flop should fit comfortably, neither too loose nor too snug. Straps that are too tight could rub and cause blisters. Too loose straps may result in you losing the shoe at a critical moment – resulting in injury. Consider a flip-flop with extra padding on the part of the strap that fits between your toes.

* Your foot should fit perfectly on the sole. Your heel should not hang off the back, nor your toes off the front.

* Dispose of worn flip-flips, no matter how much you loved them last year. Old shoes lose their ability to support and protect your feet, and it’s easy to find a new pair to replace old ones.

* Still not sure which flip-flop is the right choice? Start with APMA Seal Accepted pairs at APMA.org/Seal.

When to wear flip-flops

A shoe style that was once relegated to beach or poolside is now considered acceptable in a variety of settings. It’s not uncommon to see people wearing flip-flops to the mall or grocery store, when they’re out for a stroll, or even in the office. Flip-flops have even made inroads into the bridal scene, with some comfort-minded brides wearing them for their weddings and receptions.

Deciding whether wearing flip-flops is socially appropriate for the occasion is up to you, but there are some times when you should not wear them for safety reasons.

* When doing yard work – such as mowing the lawn or working in the garden – it’s best to wear shoes that cover and protect your entire foot. Flip-flops don’t offer sufficient support or protection.

* For long walks, opt for a good walking shoe. Even the sturdiest styles of flip-flops don’t offer sufficient arch support and shock absorption for extended walking.

* Playing sports calls for the right footwear. Choose a shoe that is designed for the sport you’re playing. Flip-flops don’t offer adequate support or protection for hard play and may come off your foot at a crucial moment. They might lose you the game at best, and leave you with a foot or ankle injury at worst.

Finally, put away your flip-flops when the weather is bad. “This one may seem obvious,” Garoufalis says, “but some people continue to wear their flip-flops even when the temperature drops, rain falls, or snow is on the ground. Wearing flip-flops in bad weather puts you at risk of injury if your foot slips out of a wet shoe or even frostbite if temperatures fall too low.”

Expert skin care tips for glowing skin on your wedding day

(BPT) - The ideal dress, the perfect menu, the heartfelt vows – to these add another necessity of your dream wedding: gorgeous, glowing skin. Throughout your entire wedding – from the moment you start walking down the aisle to when you exchange vows to your first dance as man and wife – the focus is on your face. Beautiful skin is essential, and with some expert tips, achieving it doesn’t have to be difficult.

“On your wedding day, smooth, glowing skin is an absolute must. Good skin care is an internal and external process,” says Veronica Barton-Schwartz, a leading expert in skin care with more than 30 years of experience.

Barton-Schwartz founded the Skin and Body Care Center in Malibu, Calif., where she uses her extensive knowledge to help clients look and feel their best. Whether she’s prepping a celebrity for the red carpet or a bride before her big day, she helps clients get smooth, healthy skin that truly glows. Here are her top skin care tips for brides-to-be:

1. Start three months ahead of the big day

“Start prepping skin at least three months in advance. That will give you enough time to ensure that your skin is clear, smooth and glowing for your special day,” says Barton-Schwartz. She recommends finding a qualified esthetician to help you choose the right treatments, but here are some general guidelines based on age:

20s: “When brides are in their 20s, they most likely are facing acne and some discoloration from sun damage. Deep-cleaning facials are a must to prep the skin at this age,” say Barton-Schwartz.

30s up: “In your 30s and 40s, the skin needs exfoliating regularly because it only exfoliates naturally every 35 days as opposed to every 14 days in your 20s. This is the time to start using retinoids to help improve the overall texture and tone of your skin,” she says.

40s and 50s: “In your 40s, your estrogen levels are tapering so your skin will be drier. You'll have to add collagen-building peptides morning and night to your skin care regimen. In your 50s, you'll notice loss of elasticity and you will need stronger antioxidant treatments and moisturizers. The older you get the more important it is to use a good serum under your moisturizer to help combat dry skin and loss of elasticity,” she explains.

2. Eat foods and beverages that nourish skin

When it comes to healthy skin, it’s not only how you treat it externally, but internally as well. Barton-Schwartz says it’s wise to eliminate all sugar and white flour while increasing some skin care superstar foods. “Increase consumption of fresh fruits, vegetables and lean protein,” suggests Barton-Schwartz. “Add more essential oils and healthy fats, like salmon and sardines, to lubricate dermis layers. Drink more water. Water is absolutely vital for every process in the body and especially for your skin.”

3. Consider supplements that benefit the skin

Supplements can greatly benefit skin health from the inside, out. In addition to a good multi-vitamin, Barton-Schwartz suggests considering alpha lipoic acid that assists metabolism, DMAE to improve muscle tone under skin, Co-Q10 that increases metabolic efficiency and improves heart health, and omega-3s (found in fish oil) for heart, eyes, brain, skin and overall body health. “The research of the benefits of fish oil is growing every day and I believe my good health and skin is partly due to the fact that I've been taking Nordic Naturals since I was in my 40s,” she says. “Now I'm 65 and I still have youthful skin.” For more information about Nordic Naturals omega-3 fish oil supplements, visit www.nordicnaturals.com.

4. Don’t forget last minute to-do’s for the big day

When the big day comes, you’re likely to feel a mix of emotions: excitement, anxiety, etc. Some important day-of skin care tips can help you stay calm and look your best: “Eat some protein in the morning and take a walk to boost circulation and lymphatic drainage. Use your Veronica Peptides to help with any puffiness and dark circles under your eyes,” suggests Barton-Schwartz. “For your complexion, use a sheer, satin-matte foundation, medium coverage concealer for trouble spots, a light dusting of pressed powder and a powder blush. Keep your makeup natural. Wear waterproof mascara, just in case.”

Dull, brittle locks? Follow the 4 expert rules for strong, beautiful hair

(BPT) - For years, women have been working at the ends of hair, rather than the foundation – the scalp. Now, it is time to start working at the right end of hair.

Ninety-nine percent of hair’s natural strength and beauty comes from the scalp, CLEAR Scalp & Hair Beauty Therapy reports. A well-nourished scalp is the right foundation for strong, beautiful hair.

To help women commit to working at the right end of hair, CLEAR Scalp & Hair Therapy experts Dr. Francesca Fusco, a leading New York City dermatologist, and celebrity stylist Jen Atkin, are sharing their secrets to strong, beautiful hair.

Rule No. 1 – Care for your scalp like your skin: Dr. Fusco’s advice is to give the scalp the TLC it needs, just like you would the skin on your face. This will create the right foundation for strong, beautiful hair. “Rule No.1 is to wear a hat when outdoors to protect the scalp and hair from UV damage,” she says.

Rule No. 2 – Exfoliate: Dr. Fusco recommends exfoliating the scalp by shampooing regularly. “It is important to shampoo regularly to prevent product buildup and dulling dead cells on the scalp and hair,” says Dr. Fusco. Regular shampooing also allows for efficient absorption of conditioners.

Rule No. 3 – Moisturize: It’s essential to moisturize and nourish the scalp to create the right foundation for strong, beautiful hair. The optimal time to moisturize is immediately after shampooing. “While the line of CLEAR shampoos are formulated to feed scalp, regular shampooing also helps to cleanse and remove product buildup. This allows the conditioning product to absorb efficiently and deliver the beneficial ingredients to the hair,” says Dr. Fusco.

Rule No. 4 – Treat your strong, beautiful hair: Atkin defines strong, beautiful hair as strands that have shine and body, and don’t easily break when combing.
What parents need to know about concussions

(BPT) - Parents of young athletes know that along with the many benefits of participating in sports, there comes a certain amount of injury risk. And while most would agree that the benefits of being active and involved in athletics outweigh those risks, it’s important to make sure your child gets proper treatment if an injury occurs. As more evidence surfaces about long-term health challenges related to concussions, it’s especially crucial that parents bring themselves up to speed on the proper procedures for caring for an athlete who experiences a concussion.

The most important thing parents need to know about concussions is that if an athlete exhibits any signs or experiences any symptoms of a concussion, he or she should be immediately removed from play. While this recommendation is nothing new, the American Academy of Neurology (AAN) is again emphasizing its importance with the release of its updated 2013 sports concussion evidence-based guidelines.

“Among the most important recommendations the academy is making is that any athlete suspected of experiencing a concussion should immediately be removed from play,” says Christopher C. Giza, MD, co-author of the AAN guidelines. “We’ve moved away from the concussion grading systems we first established in 1997 and are now recommending concussion and return to play be assessed in each athlete individually. There is no set timeline for safe return to play.”

For parents unfamiliar with concussion signs and symptoms, they include:

* Headache and sensitivity to light or sound
* Changes to balance, coordination and reaction time
* Changes in memory, judgment, speech and sleep
* Loss of consciousness or a “blackout” (happens in less than 10 percent of cases)

Removal from play is just the first step in properly treating a concussion. After a player who is exhibiting concussion signs or having concussion symptoms is removed, it’s equally important that the player be examined by a licensed health care professional trained in diagnosing and managing concussions. “Being seen by a trained professional is extremely important after a concussion,” says Jeffrey S. Kutcher, MD, co-author of the AAN guidelines. “If headaches or other symptoms return with the start of exercise, stop the activity and consult a doctor.”

If your athlete is diagnosed with a concussion, it’s extremely important to follow the recommendations of the health care professional, and the athlete should not be permitted to resume any sports-related activities until he or she is cleared by a licensed health care professional to do so. Parents, coaches and officials should all work together to see that the health care professional’s recommendations are followed, ensuring the best possible short- and long-term outcome for the athlete.

Parents, coaches and officials should familiarize themselves with concussion protocols before they ever get to the field or court, but the AAN also offers a smartphone app should you need to review them. The Concussion Quick Check app can be downloaded free of charge and provides a handy guide to making sure your athlete gets the proper care.

In addition to emphasizing proper care for athletes exhibiting concussion symptoms, the new AAN guidelines include the following concussion-related findings:

* Among the sports in the studies evaluated, risk of concussion is greatest in football and rugby, followed by hockey and soccer. The risk of concussion for young women and girls is greatest in soccer and basketball.

* An athlete who has a history of one or more concussions is at greater risk for being diagnosed with another concussion.

* The first 10 days after a concussion appears to be the period of greatest risk for being diagnosed with another concussion.

* There is no clear evidence that one type of football helmet can better protect against concussion over another kind of helmet. Helmets should fit properly and be well maintained.

* Licensed health professionals trained in diagnosing and managing concussion should look for ongoing symptoms (especially headache and fogginess), history of concussions, and younger age in the athlete. Each of these factors has been linked to a longer recovery after a concussion.

* Risk factors linked to chronic neurobehavioral impairment in professional athletes include prior concussion, longer exposure to the sport and having the ApoE4 gene.

* Concussion is a clinical diagnosis. Symptom checklists, the Standardized Assessment of Concussion (SAC), neuropsychological testing (paper-and-pencil and computerized) and the Balance Error Scoring System may be helpful tools in diagnosing and managing concussions but should not be used alone for making a diagnosis.

To view the entire AAN concussion report and find more concussion resources, visit www.aan.com/concussion.

People may ask what you do in your free time, as if you have so much time to spare.
Healthy summer skin: tips for every age

(BPT) - As people show more skin with the summer season, it is important to get into a skincare routine that fits your lifestyle. Extended time in the sun can result in unwanted wrinkles, blemishes and sagging skin, not to mention more serious consequences – melanomas, scarring and skin cancer.

Current estimates show that one in five Americans will be diagnosed with skin cancer in their lifetime. Fortunately, it only requires simple steps alongside a protective mindset to prevent skin damage at every stage of life. To maintain a healthy exterior this season, board-certified dermatologist Dr. Stanferd L. Kusch provides the following tips for strong, glowing skin at any age:

If you’re in your 20s

Though you may not be worrying about wrinkles yet, your skin may start to show warning signs of damage. Now is the time to focus on prevention.

* Stay hydrated: Drinking water helps delay the appearance of wrinkles.

* Quit smoking: Smoking strips your skin of elastin and collagen, leaving you at the risk of severely premature facial wrinkling.

* Eat smart: Foods that are high in vitamin C and antioxidants help prevent wrinkles by reflecting UV radiation from the sun.

If you’re in your 30s

This decade is the first time many see distinct signs of aging and skin damage, and it becomes necessary to build a more aggressive damage control and prevention regimen.

*Assess the damage: Take advantage of free health screenings at your local pharmacies or retailers.

* Maintain reduced stress levels. Ask your pharmacist or clinician about the effects of cortisol and stress on your skin and weight.

* Get acquainted with retinoids: Retinoid creams contain compounds found in vitamin A and are used to treat wrinkles, sun damage and acne. Retinoid creams are available in both prescription and over-the-counter treatments.

* Make sunscreen a habit: Use (and reapply) sunscreen throughout the day whenever you go outside.

If you’re in your 40s

Years of sun exposure can leave your skin with noticeable lines, blotchiness or dryness.

* Limit exposure: Decreasing sun exposure is the best way to prevent skin cancer.

* Moisturize regularly: While moisturizers won’t slow down the aging process, they can help soothe increasingly raw or irritated skin and can help strengthen collagen.

* Add a little pep: Skin creams with peptides (small chains of protein molecules) can stimulate collagen and plump sagging skin.

If you’re 50-plus

For people age 50 and older, it’s critical to be aware of changes in your skin that may reflect the status of its health.

* Self check: Monitor changes in your skin and look out for persistent pink, scaly patches and red or black pearly spots or bumps – these can sometimes be indicators of skin cancer.

* See a dermatologist: By age 50, everyone should have a total body skin check to screen for skin cancer.

* Continue good habits: Sunscreen is still an absolute must for this age range, and moisturizers and hydration are even more important than ever.

No matter what your age, everyone feels most confident when their skin is its healthiest. Visit your doctor or take advantage of free counsel from pharmacists and local health screenings. For example, Sam’s Club hosts health screenings every month which are free and available to the public. For a full schedule of Sam’s Club screenings through October, visit SamsClub.com/healthyliving. This season, take action to prevent and minimize skin damage, so your skin is nourished, protected and healthy for many summers to come.
