Five home improvements for the love of spring

(BPT) - Improved value, curb appeal and livability are the benchmarks for any smart home improvement. But some upgrades you do for the sheer joy of it. The best home improvements deliver all those smart qualities and speak to your heart at the same time.

With spring home improvement season approaching, here are five home improvements that you can do for the love of spring – and the love of your biggest investment:

Add/replace a skylight

Abundant natural light and fresh air are among the joys of spring, and replacing an old, energy-inefficient skylight, or adding one where none existed before, is a great way to welcome sunlight and spring breezes into your home. Sunlight’s positive effect on mood is well-documented, and adding a fresh-air skylight, which comes with a screen, offers other health benefits as well. Opt for an energy saving solar powered fresh-air skylight and you can enjoy the benefits of passive ventilation to reduce humidity and stale air in your home along with more natural light.

From a practical standpoint, installing an Energy Star-qualified skylight like those made by VELUX America can help you control heating, cooling and lighting costs in your home. Replacing an older, less efficient skylight with a new solar-powered, fresh-air skylight, with a rain sensor, can also ensure your home stays protected from spring showers. You can also choose solar powered blinds for even more energy efficiency, and both are eligible for a 30 percent federal tax credit. To learn more about energy-efficient skylights, visit www.veluxusa.com or energystar.gov.

Add/improve a deck

The trend toward outdoor living spaces continues, with decks being one of the most sought-after amenities among home buyers. In fact, adding a wooden deck can recoup more than 77 percent of the deck’s cost when you sell your home, according to Remodeling Magazine’s Cost vs. Value Report.

If you don’t already have a deck, adding one – whether wood or composite – not only enhances your home value, it will be a great place to celebrate the arrival of spring. If you already have a deck, consider value-enhancing upgrades like new balusters, lighted post caps, built-in seating and even planters.

Install a kitchen backsplash

Spring brings a bright, colorful feel to the world and you can easily incorporate that sentiment into your kitchen by adding a backsplash. A project easily within the capabilities of most do-it-yourselfers, backsplashes are both functional and decorative. Granite, ceramic or glass tile protects the wall behind the range or cook top from splatters of food or grease while brightening valuable workspace and serving as a visual focal point for the room.

Great kitchens sell homes, and the room is one of the most-used in any home. Upgrading your kitchen is almost always a good investment, one that improves resale value and your enjoyment of your home.

Upgrade bathroom floors

Bathroom renovations are also popular and a minor bathroom remodel can return more than 65 percent of the cost at the time of resale, according to the Cost vs. Value Report. While replacing countertops and fixtures are common remodeling tasks in a bathroom, don’t overlook the biggest surface in the room – the floor.

Many modern builders install vinyl floors in bathrooms because they are durable and cheap. Switching out this common material for stone or ceramic tile is a great way to brighten the room and give your bath a whole new look.

Improve your entryway

Your front door and entryway are the first impression visitors have of your home’s decor. A welcoming entry invites guests in and gives you a mood boost every time you walk through it.

This year, celebrate spring by replacing an old worn wooden door with a sturdy, decorative steel door – an improvement that recoups nearly 85 percent of its cost when you sell, according to Remodeling Magazine. To really celebrate spring, add a screen door. You’ll be able to let in fresh air and spring breezes while keeping insects out. Plus, a screen door is essential Americana, creating a welcoming openness that epitomizes the joy of spring.

Kitchen updates that won't break the bank

(BPT) - Take a look around your home and think about which spaces you use most. If the kitchen made the list, you’re not alone. For most homeowners, the kitchen is the heart of their home, and all the time spent there likely causes a fair amount of wear and tear. If this sounds like your kitchen, it might be time for a remodel.

While the National Association of Home Builders finds that home remodeling is at its highest level since 2005, homeowners are still being understandably cautious with their investments. The good news is that no matter the size of your budget, there are cost-effective ways to update your kitchen to revitalize the center of your home.

1. Yes, you can update your cabinets

The most dramatic change you can make in your kitchen is to update the cabinetry. But for many, the thought of new cabinetry equates to a budget breaker. According to Sarah Reep, design lead for QualityCabinets, it certainly doesn’t have to be. “The key is to do your homework and find a brand that offers the trifecta of style, function and affordability,” says Reep.

To keep pace with consumer requests and spending, QualityCabinets recently expanded its budget-friendly Woodstar line to include additional in-demand finish options, door styles and accessible design features. “Homeowners want to stay on budget without compromising on style or function. We designed this line so they don’t have to,” says Reep.

2. Set the stage with a beautiful backsplash

Another affordable way to make a statement is by updating or adding a backsplash. “A backsplash is a subtle way to update your kitchen. Choose clean white subway tiles or add some drama with interesting patterns or colorful glass tiles,” advises Reep. Home improvement stores like Lowe’s or The Home Depot carry DIY tile kits in a variety of colors that are fairly simple to install yourself. Additionally, stylish, removable tile decals can help jazz up your walls quickly without the cost and commitment of tile.

3. Everything but the kitchen sink

Not quite. The sink is one of the most frequently used features in a kitchen but easily ignored. Updating your kitchen sink to serve as a focal point of the room can do wonders for your space. A beautiful apron-front sink or sleek new faucet can create a dramatic update to your kitchen and provide that attention-grabbing “wow” factor. Pair it with a new coat of paint or light fixtures that complement your design vision and you’ll be amazed by what you can accomplish.

Bathroom upgrades that boost livability for anyone aging in place

(BPT) - Staying safely in their own home as they grow older is a major concern for many Americans. In a 2012 survey by AARP, 70 percent of surveyed members said they were “extremely or very concerned about aging in place.” Even if you maintain an active lifestyle and good health, growing older often requires you to manage changes in mobility, vision and accessibility.

The bathroom is both one of the most important and riskiest rooms in the house for people aging in place. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says falling in the bathroom can be particularly harmful for older people, and encourages homeowners to take steps to reduce the risk of falling in the bathroom. If you plan to live independently at home for as long as possible, making a few simple changes in the bathroom can help you do so more comfortably and safely.

Here are a handful of cost-effective changes that can help facilitate aging in place:

* Raise fixtures – Increasing the height of key fixtures such as the toilet and sink can provide greater comfort and ease of use for people with mobility challenges. Replacing a standard-height toilet with one 16 to 17 inches high is an easy, affordable task. While most standard toilets are 14 or 15 inches tall, the extra two to three inches of height can make a big difference for anyone with mobility issues. The Champion 4 Right Height toilet from American Standard provides a comfortable 16 1/2-inch ADA-compliant height, plus powerful, clog-free flushing performance.

* Replace older faucets – Conventional two-handle faucets can be difficult to manage for people with arthritis or decreased flexibility of the hands. Lever-style faucets are a good option for convenient ease of use. Single-handle styles are another easy to operate alternative. For single handle sink and shower faucets, be sure to ask for styles that have a hot limit safety stop to restrict how far the handle can be pushed toward the hot side. For the shower, a thermostatic mixing valve that allows the temperature to be preselected to avoid scalding is another critical feature.

* Secure your bathing environment – To minimize the risk of falls, install grab bars in showers, above tubs and around the toilet to help provide stability. Consider a walk-in tub or shower to enhance safety, or add a seat to shower enclosures. The American Standard Walk-in Bathtub offers accessible, and enjoyable, bathing with a built-in comfort seat and deep soaking dimensions. In the main part of the bathroom, remove area rugs that may pose a tripping hazard. Consider replacing slick surfaces like smooth ceramic tile with slip-resistant flooring that provides a gripping texture, such as textured vinyl or tile.

* Look at lighting – Vision changes are a reality of aging for most people. Bathroom lighting should provide ample illumination while minimizing glare and shadows that can hinder depth perception. Invest in both overhead lighting and task lighting in areas where you groom. Waterproof lighting over showers and bath tubs can enhance visibility and safety when climbing in or out of bathing areas. Natural light can also boost safety and mood. Consider installing a skylight (tubular skylights can bring natural light to lower level bathrooms) or replacing traditional window panes with options that provide privacy without blocking light, such as glass blocks or frosted glass.

Transforming your bathroom into a safe haven with stylish, accessible design solutions can help support changing needs as you age.

Creating the perfect sleep environment this spring

(BPT) - Everyone, including moms and doctors, can agree that a good night of sleep is necessary for good health, high energy, and an individual’s overall well-being. Not getting enough good sleep – or rapid eye movement sleep – can affect the mind and body’s ability to react appropriately to outside factors, the National Sleep Foundation reports.

Creating the perfect sleep environment is the first step toward ensuring a good night of sleep. March, the first month of spring, is also National Sleep Awareness Month, and it aims to remind everyone why a good night of zzz’s is so important. One in four adults in the United States experience occasional sleepiness, difficulty falling asleep, or waking up feeling un-refreshed at least a few times per week, according to the National Sleep Foundation.

Fortunately, you can implement these tips this spring, and create a comfortable sleeping environment in your home for both you and your family.

* Eliminate distractions – Electronics. Noises. Lights. Many items, such as laptops, TVs and cellphones, commonly found in bedrooms can cause distractions and prevent a person from entering REM sleep. Remove these items from the room. Also, consider running a fan or white noise machine to create a soft sound barrier, which will help muffle unexpected sounds like a person flushing the toilet or an engine rumbling loudly on the street outside.

* Establish comfort – Creating a sleep-conducive environment is an important factor in making the most out of every minute you sleep. Cuddle up each night with soft linens and create a calming atmosphere in the bedroom. To do this, try adding Downy Infusions Lavender Serenity liquid fabric softener when washing your sheets and sleepwear this season, to make your linens and sleepwear silky, soft and soothing. It will help lull you right into bed. With Downy you can wake up to a great scent and start the day off on the right side of the bed.

* Be routine – The human body reacts favorably to familiar and repeated movements. So consider following a routine every night, whether it’s taking a warm bath, reading a chapter in a book or journaling. The National Sleep Foundation advises against watching TV or using electronics as part of this routine because electronics can hinder quality sleep.

* Stay active – Sleep is needed to give the body energy to get through its daily activities. Conversely, daily activities are needed to tire the body out for a good night of sleep. Consider adding physical activities into your daily schedule so you can settle into bed between the covers each night, tired and ready for a good night of sleep.

Nobody enjoys walking around in a mental fog or having no energy during the day, so be sure to create the perfect sleep environment in your home for you and your family this spring. It will help you get the most out of every minute of your zzz’s.

Home chefs use new technology to cook with ease

(BPT) - Home cooks are spending more time in their own kitchens and less time dining out, according to the January Monthly Measuring Cup Trend Report. Nearly half of surveyed consumers said they’re dining out less this year than they did in 2012 and are relying more on their cooking skills at home. Fortunately, technology makes it easier than ever for home chefs to prep and cook meals at home and clean up conveniently and efficiently afterward.

“People seem to be enjoying the cooking experience again. With all the kitchen tools and equipment available today, it’s becoming even easier for consumers to recreate a restaurant-quality meal at home,” says Bob Rodenbeck, research and development director at Delta Faucet Company. “Smart innovations in the kitchen help support this trend by making it possible for aspiring home chefs to design their culinary creations while staying within budget.”

Intuitive prep help

From automatic and voice-activated coffee makers to measuring cups that have built-in digital scales, new innovations are making common kitchen prep tools more intuitive. The research and design experts at Delta Faucet spent years studying home cooks before introducing Touch2O Technology in 2008, a first-of-its-kind tap-on and tap-off technology for kitchen faucets. With this technology, users can start the flow of water with a forearm or wrist when hands are messy, helping reduce the potential for cross-contamination.

Build-your-own cookbook

Devices like smartphones and tablets are replacing some of the traditional, dog-eared cookbooks and recipe boxes by delivering endless advice at the touch of a virtual button. Food-focused websites such as Epicurious and Allrecipes help cooks not only find new recipes but also allow users to save and organize recipes, read reviews, learn new tricks to enhance their dishes, and share their findings with others. In fact, three quarters of women say they are trying new dishes at home with inspiration from social sites inspired by beautiful visuals and ideas from different cultures, according to the Monthly Measuring Cup.

Smarter kitchen clean up

All that hard work in the kitchen doesn’t end after the meal is done, and thanks to new, hard-working storage solutions like silicone containers, home cooks can store leftovers in a more eco-minded and versatile way. Silicone-based storage containers can withstand heat of up to 500 degrees, making them safer for microwave, dishwasher and freezer use. Not sure just how long last night’s lasagne will remain fresh? New refrigerator and freezer technologies are incorporating food management systems to help keep track of the location and expiration dates of the food inside.

Eating in never looked so good for today’s home chefs, who are getting new forms of support - from prep to clean up - thanks to smart kitchen solutions.

Take control and mitigate mold growth in your home

(BPT) - Damp, dark areas of the home, such as an unfinished basement, can often be trouble spots for homeowners hoping to increase their living space. Left unfinished, these areas of the home can potentially suffer significant damage, be prone to flooding or develop mold. When it comes to home improvement, homeowners are wise to consider the affects of moisture and mold buildup and how they can be combated.

Mold growth, usually a result of excess moisture, also can be detrimental to one’s health. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention says that mold can survive in almost any conditions, and can cause visual, respiratory and even skin problems. Mold growth can also contribute to poor indoor air quality.

Homeowners looking to turn an unfinished basement into a liveable space or take control of mold growth can help protect their home from unexpected expenses later on, and also add value to their home. There are several techniques to control moisture penetrating their home. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency suggests homeowners consider techniques that manage water outside the foundation walls, ensure that the home is properly ventilated with exhaust fans in at least each bathroom and the kitchen, and size the home’s air conditioning unit correctly. Homeowners are also recommended to use construction techniques that can help control water, air movement, vapor diffusion as well as condensation.

More often than not, mold is found in homes that do not have adequate insulation. As moisture builds up within walls, the interior of the walls can start to slowly rot. This rot can emit a foul smell and eventually reduce the stability and quality of the home. Homeowners who want to address moisture and mold growth should consider a complete solution that halts future opportunities for mold growth and prevents potential costly repairs in the future.

Using a modern insulation material such as spray foam insulation, like that available from Icynene, is one solution that can assist. As a vapor-permeable material, spray foam insulation allows moisture to travel through it, enabling it to dry completely. Additionally, spray foam insulation is not considered a food source for mold, thereby quashing the probability of further mold growth. Properly insulated wall cavities and crawl spaces control moisture, minimize air leakage, save on energy bills as well as improve occupant comfort.

Getting to the root of mold issues is critical for any homeowner looking to add investment value to their home. A material like spray foam insulation can be applied within seconds to the walls, ceiling and floors of a basement to plug any cracks or gaps to deliver immediate results. More information on how spray foam insulation can help control moisture and mold growth can be found online at www.icynene.com.

High-design, high-tech ideas for making your home more luxurious

(BPT) - With so many demands on our time these days, it’s easy to relegate adding luxurious elements to the home as something better suited for another day. Yet, with concerted effort and a few purposefully chosen items, it is easier than ever to create a home environment that pampers you each and every day. To create your luxurious lifestyle, begin by incorporating fixtures that blend functionality, aesthetic appeal and innovative design into your whole home – expanding beyond general living areas into practical rooms like the kitchen and bath. By focusing on the basic elements of these spaces you can easily add style, functionality and character to the ambiance of your entire home.

As you explore high-quality products and fittings, you’ll notice a wide array of products with high-end technology solutions that enhance everyday living. Increased attention to design and aesthetics, paired with extensive research and development, have elevated many home products beyond basic functional needs. Today, the humble faucet boasts high-quality features that focus on sustainability, ease of use and, of course, high-end appearances.

When exploring the myriad faucet options available, keeping the following aspects in mind can help you create a lavish space that will leave you feeling pampered and guilt-free.

Design aesthetics: Today, faucet designs range from traditional to ultra-modern, classical to futuristic, or even intricately embellished to minimalistic and sleek. This variety of styles allows you to use the fixture as a key design element in the space. For example, when creating an opulent bath space, details like Swarovski crystal accents on faucet finials can enhance the lavish feel of your bath instead of simply blending in.

Delta Faucet Company industrial designer Celine Garland says these small details can make all the difference in the overall design of your kitchen or bath space. “Just as a statement necklace or bright heel can take a little black dress from everyday to jaw-dropping, the perfect faucet can provide the finishing touch that transforms your kitchen or bath from memorable to unforgettable,” Garland says.

Functionality: Beyond aesthetics, innovative enhancements, such as touch activations, add convenience and a sense of ease to both the kitchen and bath space. For instance, the Brizo Charlotte electronic lavatory faucet brings more to the bath experience than just its flowing lines and classical elegance; it also increases ease of use through SmartTouchPlus Technology, which enables both hands-free and touch-sensitive operation. Additionally, TempIQ Temperature Control Technology senses the temperature of the water before it leaves the spout. An LED light built into the top of the faucet changes color from blue to magenta to red, letting users know exactly when water has reached the desired temperature. It automatically adjusts the water mixture to ensure a consistent water temperature and includes a high-temperature limit stop that offers an added degree of safety in the bath.

Water conservation: In addition to luxury, modern bath fittings offer sensible and environmentally friendly features that delight eco-minded consumers. New technologies that add greater dimensions to water flow provide a more satisfying experience without increasing water consumption. Look for the WaterSense label to identify lavatory and shower products that help conserve water while performing as well or better than less efficient models.

By adding fashion and functionality, bath and kitchen fittings can bring a new dimension of luxury to the home. So when planning your next luxury home upgrade, don’t forget how incorporating modern technologies into these often overlooked accents can enhance both your design aesthetic and your everyday experience.

Five tips for kitchen redos

(BPT) - Feel the need to renovate? If so, you’re not alone. Fifty-three percent of homeowners believe that now is a good time to remodel, according to a recent survey by Houzz.com. When deciding on where the makeover begins, look no farther than the kitchen. Kitchens are a major selling point for homebuyers, so a kitchen remodel is good for the home-selling price. Even if you have no plans to move, the kitchen gets more traffic than any other area of a home and serves as the family hub, so it deserves the attention. To ensure a successful project, keep in mind these kitchen-remodeling tips:

* Add color and light. Splashes of color and artwork can transform a kitchen from a workspace to a fun, vibrant family-gathering spot. To show off those dazzling colors, choose window treatments that let the sunshine in. And take a look at the windows themselves. High-efficiency replacement windows and patio doors can not only save you money over their less-efficient predecessors from the second they are installed, but they often retain most of their value should the home be sold, according to industry statistics. Stainless steel continues to be the most popular finish for kitchen appliances, sinks and fixtures. Besides its modern, sleek appearance, stainless steel cleans easily and resists wear and tear. That is especially true for kitchen sinks, which receive the brunt of abuse. New lines of stainless-steel sinks, in a variety of styles, configurations and sizes, are available from Moen. To ease renovation, the new styles feature an updated drop-in deck design. These drop-in sinks include Moen’s refreshed sink-deck design, a minimal, transitional style that coordinates with a variety of decor and faucet designs. The new recessed deck allows sponges or other wet items placed on the deck’s inner ledge to drain back into the sink, and not onto the countertop. The sinks’ wear-resistant, uniform, brushed finish offers durability and resistance to chipping, cracking, staining or peeling.

* Go bold with fixtures. For topping off a kitchen-remodeling project, nothing beats bold and functional fixtures. The new STo collection of stylish, modern faucets from Moen encompass a slim, sleek design, including the innovative, integrated pulldown wand which neatly docks inside of the spout. The rounded, high-arc spout of the STo faucet features a tubular design that unites with a cube-shaped base. Adding the finishing touch is a rectangular lever handle. Available in both single-handle pulldown kitchen and bar/prep pulldown models, STo faucets also feature Moen’s Reflex system, which offers self-retraction of the wand, as well as an exceptional range of motion, generous reach and secure docking retraction. Choose the Spot Resist Stainless finish, with Chrome and Matte Black as other finish options. For more information about Moen products, visit www.moen.com.

* Store in style. Kitchen storage can be practical and stylish. After determining what you don’t like about your current cabinetry - consider location, storage capacity, storage flexibility, material and finish - find out what options you have. MasterBrand offers a spectrum of cabinetry products ranging from standard to custom, with solutions for every budget and lifestyle. For more on cabinetry products from MasterBrand, visit www.masterbrand.com.

* Freshen the flooring. While design, color and surface appeal are important considerations, you’ll also want kitchen flooring that can live up to your lifestyle and provide the comfort and durability you need, according to bobvila.com. Natural stone and ceramic tile are high-end products that ooze taste and elegance. If selecting these hard surfaces, also invest in mats for areas where you’ll be standing for longer periods of time. Linoleum and vinyl offer the look of tile or wood in a more economical, easy-to-clean package. Hardwood has made great strides as a flooring option for kitchens, due to improved product quality and sealing technology.

Three tips to save time spring cleaning

(BPT) - It’s that time of year - throw the windows open and refresh your house with a good, deep clean. Americans spend nearly 70 hours cleaning their homes each year, according to a recent report from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Get your time back with three easy tips to make the process fast and stress-free.

Set the stage
Before diving into spring cleaning, tidy up your home and get rid of the clutter left behind from a long winter cooped up indoors. This will help to clear surfaces and make room for a deep clean.

Storage bins are an affordable solution for organizing items that you want to keep but don’t use frequently. Consider installing a shelving unit in your closet to create added space for items you use on a daily basis.

During warmer months, outdoor spaces can be just as functional as indoor rooms, so don’t overlook these areas when you start cleaning. Hide blankets, pillows and other items in storage that doubles as decor pieces. The design-savvy, Home Depot-exclusive storage bins, the Rubbermaid Rattan Resin Storage Cube Deck Box and Suncast Wicker Resin Deck Box provide ample room for storage, can double as a side table and match a wide variety of outdoor decor styles.

For items you’ll be throwing away, be sure to use trash bags that are up to the job. “Choose trash bags that are able to handle heavy loads of garbage without breaking or spilling,” says Rick Carpenter, Home Depot store manager. HDX Expandable Drawstring Embossed Kitchen Bags are strong, expandable bags designed to safely and efficiently hold large amounts of garbage. “The embossed texture helps prevent tears and increases durability, making them a must-have for tough cleaning jobs,” Carpenter says.

Don’t forget the tough spots
Roll up your sleeves and tackle the hard-to-reach spaces after you declutter. In the kitchen, scrub safely with Simple Green Concentrated All-Purpose Cleaner - it’s a powerful nontoxic formula that’s completely safe for children and pets and will make every inch of your refrigerator sparkle. It’s also multipurpose and can be custom-diluted for almost any type of surface cleaning, like floors and walls, pots and pans or large appliances.

Many begin and end cleaning the laundry room with emptying the dryer vent. But taking care of your dryer isn’t just limited to the lint filter screen. Small particles get through and can eventually build up inside the dryer to block the outside vent ducting. Avoid this pricey mistake and use a vacuum with a hose attachment to clean out all remaining lint. It takes a couple minutes but this easy step could save you headaches in the future.

Clean smarter to sniff less
Spring should be enjoyed, both inside and out, without the sniffles. Basic upkeep around the house with easy-to-use products can help you stay healthy and enjoying the season.

For everyday sanitizing, the Windex Touch-Up Cleaner is a multi-surface cleaning solution, ready at the push of a button. Just a dab is all you need to clean and sanitize kitchens, bathrooms and other frequently used areas of the home. Keep the Touch-Up within reach in high-traffic places (like the living room or kitchen) and encourage family members to sanitize items like the remote, faucet handle and doorknobs after each use.

“For perennial allergy sufferers, an indoor HVAC system can make a difference. The HVAC has a filtration system built into it and if maintained regularly, can help protect against pesky allergens,” Carpenter says. Below are two simple ways to maintain your HVAC system and help improve the air quality in your home all season long:

* Change your air filter regularly: Changing the air filter will prevent build-up of allergy causing particles that can enter the home. Make sure to check your specific manufacturer’s recommendations for the best possible results.

* Assess your air quality needs: If there are pets in the home or multiple allergy sufferers, you’ll want to choose an air filter with a higher rating.

Starting the spring season off with a deep clean can reduce the time you spend cleaning throughout the year. Following a deep clean, maintenance cleaning is faster and less frequent, giving you more time to enjoy spring with friends and family, gardening, grilling or simply relaxing in your backyard.
Eight easy ways to organize - and maximize - a small bath

(BPT) - The bath serves a variety of uses, from a functional room to a serene sanctuary, a storage facility to a salon. And, whether you enjoy it yourself or share with the family, every bathroom is in need of one major thing – organization. To help keep your bath feeling more serene and less insane, follow these eight ideas to help improve your organization, maximize space and even add a bit of style.

1.Supersize your shower. You don’t need to remodel – or even use a tool – to increase the size of your shower space. Simply swap your straight shower rod with a curved version. Moen offers a variety of curved shower rod options, including a new Tension Curved Shower Rod that adds up to 5 1/2 inches of elbow room without using any elbow grease for installation. The no-tool, no-drill feature makes it ideal for showers featuring ceramic tile. For more space and functionality, Moen’s Double Curved Shower Rod adds up to 7 inches of elbow room, with two rods to hang multiple shower curtains or towels.

2.Take back the tub. From shampoo and shower gel, duckies and boats, the bathtub often needs to store a variety of items. While shower caddies or shelves are great solutions, you can also make your own. Reuse your straight shower rod – but install it across the back wall of the tub. Next, use shower rod hooks to hang a variety of plastic baskets, creating instant storage for each member of the family.

3. Maximize with dual-function. Dual-function products are perfect for smaller baths, since they offer added benefits without taking up more space. Update your current toilet paper holder, towel bars and in-shower shelves with newer versions that integrate grab bars. Moen offers stylish grab bars that feature paper holders, towel bars and two shelf designs – all in a variety of finishes to help you update these bathroom basics while adding storage, safety and style.

4. Clean closets. If you have a closet in your bathroom, fully utilize its storage potential. Use labeled - and preferably see-through - bins on the floor and for higher-up shelves to keep smaller items neat, organized and easily accessible. Designate the middle shelves for frequently used linens. Finally, the inside of the closet door can be a potential location for added storage space. Hang a shoe rack and you’ll instantly have a dozen pouches to hold smaller items.

5. Hidden helpers. While space underneath the vanity offers room for storage, this area is a glutton for disorganization. Remove everything and toss any items you don’t need. Next, use baskets or bins to create places for everything. Don’t forget that the back of the doors can also be added locations to install hooks or shelves

6. Shelves for storage. Don’t limit the vertical surfaces of your bathroom for mirrors and decor (especially if you don’t have a closet) – try installing wall shelves. Choose from a variety of options – from smaller, decorative shelves that can hold perfume and toiletries – to larger hotel shelves that provide the perfect storage location for towels.

7. Get hooked. It’s one of the major pet peeves in the bathroom: towels and clothes on the floor. Solve this problem by installing robe hooks. They are inexpensive, easy to install and come in a variety of styles and finishes to match your bathroom. If you share your bath with children, be sure to install a few lower on the wall, within reach of little hands.

8. Hotel inspiration. The next time you’re staying in a hotel, take note of the amenities offered – and incorporate them into your bathroom for added functionality and organization. Did you love using the wall-mounted, magnifying mirror? Enjoy the convenience of storing the hair dryer on the wall? These same bath accessories are available for your home – so install and enjoy.

With a few simple projects, your bathroom can achieve maximum organization, use of space and style. For more information on Moen bathroom accessories, visit www.moen.com.

Wall-mounted sliding door 'reflects' a genius design solution

(BPT) - Like many couples who share a bathroom, one Arizona couple was frustrated by the space that was compromised by a swinging bathroom door. The open door swung into the bathroom vanity and took up too much space in a very traditional bathroom.

The couple turned to Board by Board, an Arizona kitchen and bath design company, to give their bathroom more space and an updated, clean design. Board by Board created a design that would incorporate a sleek, contemporary double mirrored sliding door with Wall Mount Hardware.

“The interior wall next to the swinging door had a built-in vacuum system that prevented us from using a traditional pocket door,” says Christie Board, kitchen and bath designer. “I had seen wall-mounted doors in magazines and have always loved the idea of incorporating this design into a remodel project.”

One of the challenges of using wall mounted doors was finding the “right” door. Since this was a master bathroom, the door needed to fit the clean decor of the bathroom and the master bedroom.

After much searching, Board found a one panel door and took the door to a glass company to have the door fitted with double-sided, full-length mirrors. Finding the right door was like finding a puzzle and putting the right pieces together, says Board. And the result was a simple design solution that looked ideal in both the bathroom and bedroom.

Board chose to use a valance for the door tracks on the wall mount hardware because she believed that the cleaner look would fit nicely with the master bedroom.

To handle the double sided mirrored sliding door, Board used 2610F series Wall Mount Sliding Door Hardware. The mirrored door brings a “cool” looking design element to each room. The Arizona couple is thrilled that the bathroom door conflict is solved with such a beautiful design.

The 2610F wall mount hardware features a heavy walled-aluminum door track that is precision extruded for smooth operation and can hold up to 200 pounds of door weight. The convex rail design provides single-point hanger wheel contact for low “feather touch” roll resistance. And designers and do-it-yourselfers love the box track design which prevents rollers from jumping the track.

Board has used the Wall Mount Hardware a few times since this bathroom design and mentioned that she is getting ready to do this in her own home. However, Board is going to go with the exposed wall mount, rather than the valance because she wants a more contemporary look.

“I have used Johnson Hardware products in home remodeling projects and have always had fantastic results,” says Board. “This was a cost-effective, space-saving, simple solution and I will continue to use this brand in the future.”

Simple tips to save water, money and the environment

(BPT) - There are a number of ways to save water and they all start with you. According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the average American uses about 50 gallons of water per day at home. That means a family of four uses approximately 6,000 gallons a month. The following tips can help you save water, money and the environment.

1. How to be green and clean your driving machine

Keeping your car clean with regular washing is an important part of responsible maintenance, but washing at home with a garden hose can use more than 60 gallons in as little as five minutes. Furthermore, you’re putting harmful chemicals and detergents down drains and directly into your city’s water supply.

You may be surprised to learn there is a greener way to keep your car sparkling: a professional car wash. A common misconception is that professional car washes waste water, when in fact the opposite is true. WaterSavers professional car washes, for example, use an average of no more than 40 gallons of fresh water per vehicle – less than the average home washing machine, which uses 41 gallons per load, according to the EPA. According to the International Carwash Association(R), professional car washes also responsibly dispose of – and in many cases recycle and re-use – the water runoff. For more information, visit WashWithWaterSavers.com.

2. Go green and keep your whites white

It’s easy to take steps to conserve H2O and keep your wardrobe fresh. First, only run the clothes washer when you have a full load. Make this habit for both your clothes washer and dishwasher, and you could save up to 1,000 gallons of water a month, according to Wateruseitwisely.com.

You get extra green points if you use cold water when washing your clothes. Approximately 86 percent of the energy used by washing machines is for heating the water. Washing with cold water eliminates 1,600 pounds of carbon dioxide emissions each year from just one household, according to the Sierra Club.

3. Break bad bathroom habits

Bathrooms are water hogs, accounting for about 75 percent of a home’s water usage. Adopting a green mindset in the bathroom can save major water and money. Start by switching to a low-flow showerhead, which National Geographic says saves 15 gallons of water during a 10-minute shower. Keep the occasional bath for a special treat because the average tub takes about 70 gallons to fill, so showers are much more efficient.

Toilets are another major water-waster. The current federal standard is 1.6 gallons of water per flush, so if you have an older toilet, it’s time to upgrade. By replacing old toilets with WaterSense-labeled models, the average family reduces water used for toilets by 20 to 60 percent, or about 13,000 gallons of water and $110 in water costs per year.

4. Water down the drain

When washing dishes by hand, don't let the water run while rinsing. Fill one sink with wash water and the other with rinse water. And for cold drinks, keep a pitcher of water in the refrigerator instead of running the tap. This way, every drop goes down you and not the drain.

When watering your lawn or garden, it’s best to do so in the morning or evening when temperatures are cooler to minimize evaporation. Also be sure to adjust sprinklers so only your lawn is watered and not the house, sidewalk or street. Be sure to monitor your water bill for unusually high use. Your bill and water meter are tools that can help you discover leaks.

These simple tips can help you green your household in just minutes. Not only are you helping Mother Earth, you’ll be saving money too.

Shrug off that winter chill with smart home improvement projects

(BPT) - Spring is drawing nearer and, for homeowners, now is the time to shrug off the winter chill and think about home improvement plans. Building industry experts say that it’s an ideal time to carefully consider and prioritize your plans – both cosmetic and structural.

Understanding what is an essential home improvement and what is purely cosmetic is fundamental for those looking to make a smart investment in their homes. The foundation, for example, is a key investment area during a renovation project. Hiring an energy rater, inspector or appraiser to examine the home will give a better sense of the required work and avoid any subsequent costly headaches.

If you’re thinking of going green, small changes such as using compact fluorescent light bulbs can contribute to reducing your home’s carbon footprint. Fluorescent light bulbs typically have a longer life and use less energy thereby reducing excessive energy waste as well as monthly energy bills.

Investing in energy-efficient appliances is another effective way to live green and add value to your home. Many modern air conditioners use 30 to 50 percent less energy to produce the same amount of cool air as air conditioners from the 1970s, according to the U.S. Department of Energy. Homeowners with an old central air system can consider having a new, more energy efficient HVAC system installed. While these may come with an expensive up-front cost, the savings on energy bills over the long term will prove to be a wise investment. Additionally, the inclusion of other energy efficient appliances such as refrigerators, washing machines and dryers will contribute to lower energy bills.

Another significant way to reduce energy consumption is to adequately seal the home to stop air leaks by opting for a smart insulation material. Insulation experts say that homeowners should survey their house from top to bottom, and assess any trouble spots such as drafty areas or cold zones which could be caused by air leakage. Air leakage can limit the effectiveness of heating systems and leave you with higher energy bills. According to InsulationSmart.com, floors, walls and ceilings can account for up to 31 percent of air leakage in a home. Spray foam insulation, which can help combat air leakage, is growing in popularity amongst homeowners since it is an energy-efficient material that delivers year-round benefits. Spray foam insulation, like that available from Icynene, works well in all types of homes across the country, regardless of climate.

Spray foam insulation performs for the life of the property, ensuring that homeowners enjoy comfortable indoor temperatures all year round without overrunning their heating and cooling equipment. Insulation experts from Icynene note that quality spray foam insulation can noticeably reduce heating and cooling costs, in some cases by up to 50 percent. Additionally, spray foam insulation helps minimize random airborne moisture and pollutants from entering the home, ideal for allergy sufferers. More information on the effectiveness of spray foam insulation is available online at www.icynene.com.

Updating your home with cost- and earth-conscious improvements will provide a multitude of benefits. Not only will your home be more comfortable, but you’ll be saving money and doing right by the environment.

Today's dream home utilizes modern technology for increased functionality

(BPT) - The number of improving housing markets expanded for a sixth consecutive month in January 2013 according to the National Association of Home Builders/First American. With this positive sign, it’s an interesting time for homeowners to consider investing in high-tech home upgrades that not only increase their home’s value and simplify everyday tasks, but also create a dream home ambience for the entire family to enjoy.

From lighting fixtures that turn on at your expected arrival to heated bathroom floors that warm up just before your alarm clock goes off, it can be surprising how one or two high-tech luxury upgrades can transform the functionality of your home.

According to Jack Thomasson, HGTV Dream Home House Planner, to get the biggest bang for your buck, the key is to start adding these updates where it matters the most.

“The kitchen is the perfect place to apply technology that connects our home to our lifestyle,” says Thomasson, “When applied properly, technology in the kitchen can have a greater impact than when applied in any other room of the house.”

For example, the simple addition of a new faucet with touch technology, like those found in the 2013 HGTV Dream Home, can add ease and efficiency to everyday tasks. By allowing the water flow to be activated with a simple tap anywhere on the faucet, handle or spout, faucets like the Delta Cassidy single-handle pull down kitchen faucet with Touch2O Technology, help homeowners conserve water and avoid unwanted messes while entertaining.

This ease and efficiency added by touch technology is being incorporated into new homes at rates never seen before, as more and more consumers use the technology on a daily basis to interact with smart phones, ATM machines, tablets, computers, printers and other devices. It is now possible to utilize touch technology on tablets and smart phones to remotely adjust lights, monitor room temperature, or even summon a hidden flat screen television. Not only are these tools adding time-saving solutions but they are also providing new energy-saving benefits that can be felt on your water, electric and natural gas bills at home.

While only about 3 percent of homes in the U.S. include these automation systems today, this percentage is expected to grow by double-digit rates as the global home automation industry is anticipated to become a $35.6 billion industry by 2016. Fueled by the latest mobile apps, homeowners across America are controlling their interior and exterior lighting, unlocking the front door for guests and arming their security systems and more with a simple touch.

Whether updating an older home or evaluating options for new construction, people have many options when it comes to incorporating technological upgrades in the home and as the market continues to grow, more exciting options will emerge. Homeowners now know they need not wait to add smart functionality and style today to create their dream home of the future.

Tips for optimizing small spaces

(BPT) - The trend toward smaller, more efficient homes is still in full swing, with new home builders offering floor plans that lower square footage while amping up usability. If your home is older, however, or you live in an apartment, your smaller space may just feel ... well, small.

Being short on space doesn’t mean you have to be short on style or efficiency. Even older small spaces can get an open, useful feel with the right design and decorating tactics. Here are a few ways you can optimize your small space:

Be size wise

Nothing makes a small room look more cramped than filling it with furnishings that are too big for the space. For example, if your living room is 10 by 12, a 9-foot-long sofa is going to dominate the room and leave little space for anything else. Conversely, placing a smaller bed (such as a twin or single) in a modestly sized bedroom is a classic trick designers and home stagers use to make a bedroom look larger.

When buying furniture for your small space, keep scale in mind. Furnishings should fit the space well, leaving plenty of area for you to move around them. Mohawk Homescapes blogger Cecilia Staniec advises homeowners take room measurements. “You should never shop for furniture without a complete set of measurements,” she writes.

Open up floor space

Smart use of wall space can open up floor space, which is often at a premium in small rooms. Some items must occupy floor space, such as sofas, tables and chairs. Others – like lighting, TVs and electronic components – don’t.

Wall-mounting TVs, especially flat screens, can be a great way to conserve floor space and create an appealing focal point for a petite room. Low-profile wall mounts, like Sanus’ Super Slim Full-motion VMF408, are perfect for small to medium screens of 26 to 47 inches. The mounts keep the screen close to the wall while providing a full range of motion for optimum viewing from multiple seating areas. Similarly, you can wall-mount your computer monitor – even an iPad.

Work with your walls

Your walls can work for you in other ways, too. Even in small rooms, the walls are one of the largest design elements. Choosing a bright or light wall color can help a smaller room feel more open and airy. Adding mirrors is another way to make a room appear larger. You don’t need to install a full-length mirror on one wall; a series of smaller mirrors attractively positioned in a cluster can do the job just as well without being overwhelming.

Carefully consider accessories you place on the wall, and don’t overdo it. Too much on the walls will make them look cluttered and even smaller. Sometimes, one or two thoughtful graphic elements are all you need to make a design statement.

Let there be light

A lack of lighting can make a small room look positively cramped. Whenever possible, enhance the size and appeal of your rooms with plenty of light. Natural light is optimum and adding a skylight or solar tube is a great way to bring sunshine into your home.

If that kind of renovation isn’t in your budget, however, maximize natural light by keeping window treatments light and open. Avoid dark colors around windows, as darker hues absorb more natural light. Recessed lighting overhead can help a room feel loftier, and wall sconces provide illumination without occupying valuable floor space.

When it comes to home decorating, bigger isn’t always better and smaller doesn’t have to mean cramped. With the right blend of furnishings, colors and accessories, it’s possible to live large in any small space.

Practice water conservation at home

(BPT) - Home is the place a person can always escape for some rest and relaxation. This year, upgrade your home to be a place that also helps you conserve water and be a better environmental steward.

Technology has come a long way in improving performance and efficiency in household fixtures, especially when it comes to water usage. There are many ways you can update your home’s water-using fixtures - without sacrificing quality, comfort or design:

* Choose brands you trust. If you are planning to replace a number of fixtures in your home, look to a manufacturer that is committed to water conservation and innovation. For nearly 100 years, TOTO has innovated to make people’s lives better and protect the environment, as embodied in its PeoplePlanetWater philosophy. TOTO’s beautiful, innovative designs perform flawlessly while respecting the plant and honoring our water supply.

* Replace your toilet with an ultra-high-efficiency model. Older toilet models can consume up to 27 percent of a household’s daily water usage, according to the Environmental Protection Agency. When replacing a toilet, look to install products made from high-quality materials that have a low impact on the environment. TOTO’s dual flush NEOREST 550H consumes only one gallon of water for the full flush, and a modest 0.8 gallons for the light flush. In addition, the NEOREST 550H uses electrolyzed water, which has a slightly acidic pH value - to kill bacteria and clean the bowl - helping homeowners reduce their use of harsh cleaning products, which benefits the environment and saves money.

* Make easy enhancements. Replacing a showerhead is a relatively effortless upgrade, but can certainly help reduce the amount of water used each week in your household. Showers are traditionally the third largest water-consuming appliance in the household. Look for a replacement showerhead that boasts the WaterSense label, as these products are at least 20 percent more water-efficient. Encourage your family to shower in under 10 minutes to further reduce the amount of water you use.

* See improvements with a low flow faucet. Installing a low flow faucet into your bathroom can not only help you decrease your water usage, but also add style as well. The Wyeth Single Handle High-Efficiency Faucet is WaterSense certified and has a flow rate of a mere 1.5 gallons per minute. A transitional design, this faucet appears to float above the sink and features a sleek, easy-to-use handle. Take water conservation a step further in your home by always shutting the water off when not in use – for example, while brushing teeth.

* Minimize splashing. When using the bathroom sink, a lot of splashing around can occur. Water that ends up on the floor or the rest of the lavatory sink is wasted water, and then will require cleaning – a thankless task. TOTO has designed the Curva Self-Rimming Lavatory to help contain splashing thanks to its contemporary style and overhanging lip that delivers water effectively where it belongs – in the sink. This lavatory is also made using sustainable manufacturing processes.

Conserving water and protecting the planet using TOTO and other water-saving products not only can help you create a relaxing ambiance in your home, but also gives you a mental pat on the back knowing you are reducing your environmental footprint.

No need to buy new - a simple update will do

(BPT) - If you’re like most homeowners, you have several furniture and decor pieces around the house that have seen better days. And while the natural response is to throw away outdated items and buy something new, even lackluster home objects deserve a second chance. You can easily transform your trash into treasure with a little creativity and some elbow grease.

Follow these quick and easy makeover tips and before you know it, those worn out and uninspiring pieces will be looking great again.

Endless possibilities

Because of its resilience, plastic is a popular choice both around the house and the yard. From furniture, to kids’ toys, even coolers, plastic surfaces are everywhere. And although these pieces are inexpensive and durable, they often can look a little worse for wear after a few years of use.

Luckily, it’s easy to make over what you already have with the new Indoor/Outdoor Plastic Primer from Krylon. Plastic Primer is made with Krylon’s innovative Fusion for Plastic paint technology to offer lasting durability and improved adhesion. Simply apply the primer to any outdated or lackluster plastic surface and then paint with any Krylon product you want, including one of the 85 colors in Krylon’s Indoor/Outdoor paint line. You’ll be able to truly customize any plastic surface to fit the theme you’re looking for.

Even if the object is brand new, sometimes improvements still need to be made. Plastic storage drawers and cabinets are the perfect example of something new – and yet still boring. They often come in clear or are limited to a few, select colors that never quite match your decor theme. And unless you want to keep them hidden, re-painting is a must. By using Krylon’s Indoor/Outdoor Plastic Primer, you can paint the drawers in any color to match the rest of the room. Now, those inexpensive storage units will look like real furniture you can show off.

Make a stylish transformation

Do you have an old furniture piece that just doesn’t fit in with your decor? Chances are you do. But instead of going through the hassle of getting rid of it, breathe new life into it and transform the piece into something completely new.

Take for example, an outdated or unsightly chest of drawers you may have hidden in the attic or in the corner of the room. Instead of hiding it – give it a new outlook on life. Simply sand it down and give it a fresh coat of paint that will coordinate with the rest of your room. Add a few embellishments, such as new knobs or paint accents and voila – you have a new nightstand or end table.

You can also use the same creativity to transform an old vanity into a chic desk or an armoire into a stylish potting bench and garden center on your patio.

Picture this

Picture frames are a great way to display family portraits and your favorite memories while also adding a little style to a blank wall. Repurpose old frames you already have lying around the house to create a gallery wall with some pizzazz. With a few coats of spray paint, you can take frames from mismatched to mesmerizing. Spruce them up a bit more by using patterned papers as mats. Instead of white or cream, use dramatic colors and bold prints. Simply cut an opening the size of the photo, and you’ll have an unexpected pop of style and color in your new photo gallery.

With a few simple and easy ideas, your outdated and boring pieces can find a new spot in your home, instead of on the curb.

Upcycling: Breathe new life into decor with a dash of DIY inspiration

(BPT) - If you’ve ever looked around your house and gotten the urge to purge, you might consider pausing and first thinking about how you could transform that old, damaged piece of furniture or outdated light fixture into a fresh-faced showpiece for your home.

Not only are you doing something good for the environment - and likely your pocketbook - by restoring something, you’re embracing your inner creativity. You can make a truly one-of-a-kind decor piece, tailored to your personality and style.

This notion of restoring and reusing items that would otherwise be cast aside to the junkyard or thrift store is called “upcycling,” and it's a trend that has caught on quickly, especially in home design. With a little inspiration, creativity and the right tools, you can tackle countless decorating projects with things you already have around your home. And the best part? Upcycled pieces make for great conversation starters, often tell a good story and can even be sold for a much higher price than you put into them.

So where do you start? Here are some helpful tips for tackling your own upcycling projects.

Start with a little inspiration

Take a look through magazines, home design blogs and websites to gather inspiration. Look for pieces that catch your eye and have the same structure and “bones” as the items in your home that you’d like to restore.

For example, DremelWeekends.com is filled with inspiring and low-cost do-it-yourself projects, tool recommendations and step-by-step instructions to help you transform just about anything while bringing a new perspective to home renovation and decoration. You can even sign up to receive weekly project inspiration right to your email inbox.

Shop around without breaking the bank

Decorating your home doesn’t have to cost a fortune. Look around your basement, attic, or at yard sales and consignment shops for free or inexpensive items that you might be able to breathe new life into. The old adage “never judge a book by its cover” would apply here. Do your best to look beyond an item’s current condition and let the inspiration you’ve gleaned take over as you see its full potential in a different light. If the piece has some defects, don’t immediately overlook it. Sometimes perfection and personality can be found in the imperfection.

Secrets of upcycling success

The secret to any do-it-yourself project is to plan ahead. Beyond finding the inspiration for a project, gather the supplies and tools you’ll need, read up on step-by-step instructions, dedicate a roomy workspace where everything is at your fingertips, and be sure to carve out time to focus on the project.

But the No. 1 secret of upcycling success is to be patient and not get discouraged. If at first you don’t succeed, try, try again. It’s OK to make mistakes because sometimes you’ll uncover hidden beauty during the process. The important part is that you find the whole experience of restoring and reusing rewarding.

DIY tricks that make bathroom renovations easy

(BPT) - When it comes to home improvement, Americans have embraced doing it themselves – in a big way. Among homeowners who plan to make improvements, 64 percent say they will do it themselves, according to American Express’ Consumer Spending and Saving Report. Yet one area of home improvement continues to give even adventurous and confident DIYers pause – bathroom renovation.

“Many people who don’t think twice about installing flooring or cabinetry or even tiling on their own, still feel they need a professional to upgrade their bathrooms,” says Gray Uhl, director of design for American Standard. “However, with the availability of easy-to-install products, like no-tools toilets and Speed Connect faucets, bathroom upgrades are well within the abilities of most do-it-yourselfers.”

Upgrading or adding a bathroom continues to be a winning home improvement for owners, whether they intend to sell or stay in their homes. A mid-range bathroom remodel recoups more than 65 percent of its cost at the time of resale, according to Remodeling Magazine’s Cost vs. Value report. An upscale bathroom renovation returns more than 58 percent.

If you’re considering remodeling a bathroom, here are quick, easy ways to spruce up your bathroom yourself, and still end up with professional quality results:

Start small: the power of bath accessories

When you think of bathroom accessories, towels and toothbrush holders likely come to mind. But anything that enhances the look of your bathroom decor can function as an accessory. Simple moves like swapping out dated cabinet hardware (or adding it where there was none) can help transform the look and feel of the bath.

Switching out a boring mirror with a beveled option can turn a functional background element into something eye-catching. Or, dress up an existing mirror by adding a frame. It’s easy to find mirror framing kits online or in your favorite home improvement store.

Keep thinking creatively when it comes to accessories, and imagine what you could do in the shower area. If your shower is a tub/shower combination, replacing a standard straight curtain rod with a curved one not only creates an elegant appearance, it can give you more elbow room while you’re using the shower.

If you have a shower stall with a door, consider swapping a plain glass door with a decorative one. Home improvement stores often carry a variety of designer options that are frosted or have a pattern. A new shower door can make an old shower look fresh and bold.

Style and function: replace toilet and bathroom faucet

The toilet, sink and faucet are essential elements that can be beautiful as well as functional. Replacing dated, inefficient models with newer options can give a bathroom a whole new look – and improve its usability. Easy-to-install products make updating these important bathroom fixtures simple and speedy.

Replacing a faucet can be a challenge when there are so many moving parts to contend with – not the least of which is the drain. Typical bathroom faucets can have as many as 14 parts to connect. American Standard’s Quentin bathroom faucet collection features a Speed Connect pre-assembled drain that requires no special tools or plumber’s putty.

Products like the American Standard Champion line of high efficiency toilets (HETs) blend powerful performance and water savings with easy installation. The WaterSense-certified Champion HETs use 20 percent less water than standard toilets without losing any flushing power. Available in tall height and elongated or round-front models, these toilets offer practical features like a slow-close seat that eliminates loud slams. Plus, their permanent EverClean antimicrobial finish inhibits the growth of stain and odor-causing bacteria, mold and mildew on the surface. Made for fast, easy installation by DIYers, Champion toilets that feature the EZ-Install kit include everything do-it-yourselfers need to install the toilet without the use of special tools or difficult bolt-cutting.

Added bonus: Buy a Champion and be a champion, joining a campaign by American Standard to raise awareness that almost half the world lacks a safe way to go to the bathroom. For every Champion toilet sold in the U.S. and Canada during 2013, American Standard will donate a hygienic latrine pan to a developing country to help raise the global standard of living through safe sanitation.
Fast and fabulous fixes to banish a boring bath

(BPT) - The best bathrooms are more than just functional areas – they’re sanctuaries where you can escape, reset and recharge. And as one of the smallest and most-used rooms in the home, that’s likely why they’ve become the most popular remodeling project (78 percent), according to the National Association of Home Builders.

Luckily, simple updates can breathe new life into this small space. Transform your boring bath by incorporating these fast, fresh updates that don’t cost a fortune.

Create a focal point with updated faucets
It’s a focal point, one of the most frequently used items in the bath, so it’s important that your vanity incorporates a fabulous faucet. If you prefer more traditional styling, the Moen Wetherly bathroom faucet offers a refreshed, old-world design that’s guaranteed to add a touch of luxury. Or if you like a more industrial, yet elegant look, Gibson bathroom faucets feature an edgy, square-shaped high-arc spout and sleek lever handles. And to keep your new fixtures looking flawless, both are available at Lowe’s in Spot Resist Brushed Nickel finish, which resists fingerprints and water spots, maintaining the brilliance of the faucet.

In addition to the beautiful styling, you’ll feel good about your update, since each bathroom faucet has been certified to meet WaterSense criteria, meaning the fixtures meet the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) guidelines as an environmentally responsible and efficient product.

Add beauty with bath hardware

Once you’ve upgraded your faucet, look to the other metallic accents in the room for a subtle, yet effective way to pull together the design. Coordinating bath hardware, such as towel bars, rings, robe hooks, shelves, knobs and pulls, will instantly add a functional and fashionable impact.

Let there be light
Assess your current lighting to ensure it offers the look and feel you want for your bath. Too dark? Add new decorative fixtures that complement your faucets and hardware. There are many styles that feature multiple lamps for added illumination. Too bright? Add a dimmer switch to your lighting to soften the mood when you’re looking to relax.

Set the mood with color

According to Freshome architecture and design blog, room color affects our moods and thoughts – so choose wisely. Add a splash of color to the walls with a fresh coat of high-gloss paint to give the space an instant facelift. Create a zen retreat by enhancing your bath with shades of yellow, which are energizing and uplifting; or soft blues, which are calming, relaxing and serene.

Next, add coordinating textiles; a fabric shower curtain, plush bath towels, rugs and bath mat can add a finishing designer touch.

Shower sanctuary
A quality showerhead can dramatically improve your daily showering experience. Take your shower from lackluster to luxurious with the new Moen Halo rainshower. The pivoting, double-ring design offers up to 60 percent more coverage than standard rainshowers and features three consumer-preferred spray settings – all presented in a clean, modern design to make a style statement in any bath.

Replacing a showerhead can be a quick and inexpensive project, simply unscrew the old showerhead and attach the new one to the shower arm.

Add a finishing touch with furniture

No matter the size of your bathroom, we all want more storage. Look around your home for unused accents, such as a small shelf, chest – or even a cupboard or armoire. The extra drawer space will come in handy to keep your clutter under control – while also adding a bit of style, warmth and pizzazz to your newly updated room.

Don’t think that fix-ups have to be long, drawn-out projects. By following these fast updates, you’ll be surprised how quickly and easily you can take your bathroom from boring to a spa-like sanctuary.

Couples who design together, stay together

(BPT) - Opposites attract, and for couples who live together, compromising on personal style and design choices can be a difficult bridge to cross. Someone who wants a modern, contemporary vibe might not like the decor choice of someone who prefers a more traditional or rustic feel. What most people don’t realize, however, is that blending two opposing tastes can actually be more visually appealing than sticking with just one design style. And, more importantly, it can be done quickly and affordably.

Paint is prime

Adding a splash of color (or two, or three) is a low-cost way to liven up the blank canvas of your home. While neutral colors are ideal for selling your home, living with them might be a different story. If you want to evoke emotion, establish visual intrigue or set a certain mood, color is the best way to get the job done.

And you don’t have to stick with just one color throughout your home. Highlight an accent wall in your living room with a darker shade or apply a funky wallpaper print. Or, paint your kitchen red with shades like Crisp Crimson or Rocket Red from Dutch Boy, as it increases appetite and elevates passion, perfect for a romantic dinner for two. Purples such as Plumes or Merlot Grape, also from Dutch Boy, have been known to induce passion, ideal choices for a couple’s bedroom.

Art and soul

Bringing artistic elements into the space is an easy way to add personal flair. From wall decor and blown glass accents to picture frames and candles, no decorative piece is too small to make a big impact. Display items in groups of three for a dramatic display. Candleholders or vases in varying heights or complementary color schemes can marry two styles easily, and pairing a gothic frame with a softer, lace-applique can actually bring great dimension to an overlooked nook of the home.

Just because you’re a fan of Monet and your partner prefers Picasso, that doesn’t mean you can’t proudly display your favorite pieces for all to enjoy. While Picasso’s pieces seem more abrupt and geometric, by combining with larger, softer pieces from an impressionist painter like Monet, you can actually blend the two artistic styles seamlessly.

The perfect mix

Don’t be afraid to mix various textures and patterns. This will add dimension to the space, transforming a flat and otherwise boring look into a world of wonderment. First, pick a main color you want to focus on, which will be the anchor color for the space. Let’s say you choose blue for this role. Lay all blue fabrics on the floor – window treatments, rugs, pillows and blankets. You’ll immediately notice some that seem out of place. Remove these from the pile and you’ll begin to notice an interesting cohesion among the remaining fabrics. Next, you’ll want to incorporate a complementary color. If blue is your anchor color, add hints of orange to the mix for a playful pop.

Also, be mindful of the pattern’s scale. If you have too many large scale patterns in one space, they will be competing with each other, adding unnecessary drama. Keeping it to just one large scale print and several mix-and-match small and medium scale prints will create perfect harmony. In terms of texture, pairing coarse fabrics with smooth variants will add yet another level of dimension to the space. While too many coarse items can seem overbearing, by adding some softer, more feminine textures you can actually create an interesting, eye-provoking combination.

Taking the time to blend your and your mate’s style preferences can be a rewarding experience. Throughout the process you’ll learn his or her likes and dislikes while having fun in the process, creating a stronger, more unified couple. And by playing around with colors, textures and patterns, the end result will be a well-designed joint space that stimulates the senses from start to finish.

A small investment returns a safer and healthier home

(BPT) - Warm weather is here, which means many homeowners are beginning new DIY projects. Have you included home safety on your list?

Almost every home in the U.S. has a smoke alarm, but most do not have enough. Fire experts recommend installing alarms on every floor and inside and outside of every sleeping area. A recent survey by Kelton Research found less than a quarter of homeowners have applied this rule. A fire can double in size every 30 seconds. The sooner you hear a smoke alarm, the more time you have to escape.

Also, 75 percent of homes have a potential source of carbon monoxide (CO), but only half of the homes have a working CO alarm, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. Produced by fossil fuel-burning appliances and engines, CO can cause injury or death if it builds up in your home. A working CO alarm is the only safe way to detect this odorless and invisible gas.

Consider these questions from the experts at Kidde to determine if your home is safe from fire and CO dangers:

1. One in four older homes needs to update fire safety equipment. How old are your smoke and CO alarms? Replace your smoke alarms every 10 years and your CO alarms every seven to 10 years, based on the model you purchased. Consider purchasing an alarm with a sealed lithium battery, such as the Worry-Free smoke and CO alarms, which provide hassle-free protection for 10 years. No need to change a battery and no low battery chirps.

2. Seventy-five percent of homeowners don’t know where to install smoke alarms. Do you have enough? Place smoke alarms on every floor and inside/outside of all bedrooms. Place a CO alarm near sleeping areas and on each floor.

3. Do your alarms incorporate the newest features?

Sealed-in lithium battery – continuously powers alarm for 10 years and eliminates low battery chirps.

Digital display – shows the level of CO and updates the reading every 15 seconds.

Intelligent multi-sensor – responds faster to real fires & CO plus reduces nuisance alarms commonly caused by cooking.

4. Do you need other safety products? Do you have a fire extinguisher within reach in rooms where fires often begin: the kitchen, garage, bedroom and living areas. Place an escape ladder in second and third-floor rooms as an alternative escape route. And consider conducting a mold and radon test using a kit. A quick test shows levels of these environmental hazards that may be lurking in your home.

5. Have you developed a family escape plan? Be sure to make a plan for every room in the house and practice it regularly. Be familiar with two ways out of every room and who will assist children and those with mobility/health issues.

6. Do your children know their address and how to dial 911? Post your home address and emergency phone numbers on the refrigerator.

For a downloadable home safety checklist and other information, visit www.WorryFreeAlarm.com.

Moving or improving? Tips for a flawless painting project

(BPT) - Did you know spring is the best time to sell your home? And now that the housing market is bouncing back, there’s never been a better time to do it. But even if you’re planning to stay put for the long haul, chances are there are some much-needed touch-ups you could be doing to keep your home in tip-top shape. And you don’t have to break your back, or the bank, to do it. In fact, adding a new coat of paint is a quick, affordable, and possibly the most impactful, way to get your project done.

Prep, prime and primp

Misusing color can be a surefire way to turn people off from your home. For a more inviting look that nearly everyone can enjoy, opt for neutral paint colors. A subtle beige, slight grey or even white can do the trick.

First, move furniture out of the room and place drop cloths to protect the floor. Remove any picture frames, outlet covers and wall decor. Then, gently scrub the walls with a mild detergent and water mixture using a soft sponge to remove any dirt, grime or lint. Don’t forget to prime your walls before applying color to ensure the best end-results.

Paint like a pro

For an ultra-smooth finish, try Purdy’s line of Ultra Finish roller covers. These premium microfiber roller covers, available in 9-inch lengths and varying nap thickness, provide an even release of paint and deliver a consistent application from start to finish. Plus, they work great with any kind of paint and finish, including satin, semi-gloss and gloss, taking the guesswork out of the DIY equation.

When applying paint, start at the top and work your way down. For superior results, you’ll want to fill the well of your roller tray with paint, dip the roller in half-way and then roll it back onto the tray’s angled platform to easily remove excess paint. This will reduce dripping and improve overall paint cover. The best approach for applying paint? Use your roller cover to make an overlapping “W” pattern in a 2-foot by 2-foot area; then fill in and repeat.

For smaller interior paint projects or tight spaces, Purdy also has a variety of innovative mini roller choices that are versatile, lightweight and can quickly and easily deliver a perfect finish with smooth rolling action. These combined features make them the ideal applicator for a variety of projects like painting doors and cabinets, to freshening up tables, chairs and even bedroom furniture.

Keeping your color conviction

If you’re still feeling deprived of color after your painting project is complete, never fret. There are several ways to add a pop of color throughout your home without slathering the walls with offensive paint colors. Try incorporating fun accent pieces in your favorite colors – think lamps, frames, pillows and rugs. You can even include larger focal pieces like royal blue armchairs or a patterned couch to make a bolder statement. By keeping the overall aesthetics of your home neutral and inviting, and enhancing them with a few sight-provoking embellishments, house guests will be asking you for home decorating tips. And if your end goal is to get your home sold, consider these minor improvements a step in the right direction.
